Nathaniel Hilton Lipscomb Sr.

LIPSCOMB, Nathaniel Hilton, Sr., 90, of Richmond, Va., passed away on Sunday, September 25, 2022. He was a native of Walltown in Durham, North Carolina and the son of the late Roosevelt Lipscomb Sr. and Navie Floyd. In 1950, he graduated from Hillside High School in Durham and then received a B.S. in Business Administration from North Carolina Central University in 1954. His banking career began at the historic Mechanics & Farmers Bank, where he helped to officially open their first Charlotte branch in 1962. The next 30 years of his professional career were spent in dedicated service to southern HBCUs, serving in various financial leadership positions at Johnson C. Smith University, Saint Paul's College, Talladega College and Virginia Union University. He retired from VUU in 1995 as Vice-President of Financial Affairs. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 71 years, Gladys S. Lipscomb; one older brother, Roosevelt of Durham, North Carolina; four children, Linda D. Lipscomb (Howard Smith) of Henderson, Nevada, Sharon D. Lipscomb of Las Vegas, Nevada, Nathaniel H. Lipscomb Jr. of Charlotte, North Carolina and Eleanette M. Lipscomb of Richmond, Virginia; eight grandchildren, Nathaniel H. Lipscomb III, Nicole Lipscomb-King (Melvin King II), John Lipscomb, Constance Chavis, Steven Lipscomb, Christopher Smith, Brandon Lipscomb and Brooks Smith; one brother-in-law, Robert L. Thomas of Durham, North Carolina; four great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services begin with a wake at noon followed by services at 1 p.m. Thursday, October 6, 2022, at Scott's Chapel, 116 E. Brookland Park Blvd. It is fitting that a celebration of his life be held in his hometown of Durham, N.C., Friday, October 7, 2022. A memorial service will be held 12 noon at his alma mater, NCCU Centennial Chapel, 1902 Fayetteville St., Durham, N.C., to be followed with interment in Glenview Memorial Park.
