Nelson Wikstrom

Nelson Wikstrom, a beloved father, grandfather, husband, brother, and professor, departed from this life on August 20, 2025. He was born June 19, 1940, in Quincy, MA. His esteemed career as a professor of Political Science began in Wisconsin at the University of Superior in 1968, followed by a move to Richmond, VA, where Nelson joined the faculty of Virginia Commonwealth University. While at VCU, he received multiple awards, acted as head of the Political Science department, and attained the title of Professor Emeritus. His work included speaking engagements at multiple universities, publishing articles in scholarly journals, and authoring five books. Nelson was preceded in death by his parents, Gunnar and Anna; sister, Ann; and brother Gunnar Jr. He is survived by his wife, Anita (Lomansoc) Wikstrom; his former wife, Mary Broaddus and their daughters, Amy Wikstrom, Sara Spaeth (Timothy), and Jessica Davis; and his six grandchildren, Bridget Davis, Jacob Spaeth, Luke Davis, Zachary Spaeth, Josephine Davis, and Veronica Spaeth. Nelson is remembered as a friend for all, with his infectious personality touching so many people throughout his life. He loved his family, cars, and local events, often providing political commentary to media on local elections. Nelson also enjoyed traveling across the globe as well as local destinations, including Virginia Beach and Williamsburg.

A public visitation will be held at Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 West Broad Street, Glen Allen, VA, on Friday, August 29, 2025, from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral service will take place at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 9505 Gayton Road, Richmond, VA, on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at 12 p.m.
