Norman Craig Obituary

Norman George Craig

February 17, 1934 - May 17, 2025

Norm Craig of Richmond, VA, passed away on May 17, 2025.

Born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Norm was the only son of Samuel Craig and Evelyn Mortimore Craig McLean. He spent 49 years in newspaper and rotogravure printing, beginning at the Toronto Star, where he met his first wife, Brenda. In 1968, he moved his family to the U.S. to join the Denver Post, later settling in Richmond to work for Virginia Gravure, later acquired by Quebecor.

Norm lived a life full of creativity, curiosity, and connection. He never met a stranger and delighted others with his stories and jokes. He was a skilled carver with work ranging from wooden decoys and carousel animals to duck-head canes. One of his decoys is in the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History.

He was fortunate to have been married to Brenda R. Craig (d. 1991), then to Norma Streever Doss (where they were "The Norms").

Norm is survived by his daughter, Josephine Lowry; son, Paul Craig (Shelly); granddaughter, Emily Craig; step-grandsons, Justin and Eric Dailey; niece, Laurie Johnson (Peter); grandnephews; and great-grandniece and -nephews. He is also survived by Norma's family: stepchildren, Susan Mannix (John), Karen Capocelli (Sergio), and Clay Doss (Traci); and many step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Donations may be made to the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Richmond (Endowment Fund) or The Shepherd's Center of Richmond (TSCOR).

I have fond memories of Norm and Norma from the time I went to the First Unitarian Universalist Church. His carvings were intriguing works of art. Godspeed, Norm!

Dear Norma - Ron and I are so sad about Norm´s death. We feel like we have lost a family member because 1st UU is our family. During the years pre-Covid, I often served as a greeter and enjoyed hanging out with the two of you. Y´all introduced us to the Shepherd Center, which was a gift, and I´m still grateful for Norm´s kindness when I was struck with a monster migraine while greeting. First UU is less for Norm´s absence. I hope you are keeping well during this sad time. You are in Ron´s and my thoughts, and we will be happy to help you in any way we can. With much love, Susan and Ron Williams
