Patricia Sage Obituary
Patricia Hammond Sage
August 29, 1936 - May 23, 2025
Patricia Hammond Sage, 88 of Manakin Sabot died peacefully Friday, May 23, 2025. Patricia, Ann, Pat. Daughter, sister, Aunt, wife, mother, Granny and Great Granny. Of all her given names, Granny and Great Gran were her favorite. Born in Atlanta, GA, she grew up spending time on her grandparent's Greensboro, GA farm where she adopted a love for all farm animals - a love that followed her throughout her life. In Atlanta, she attended Grady High School where she was a cheerleader and active in various clubs. After graduation, she attended the University of Georgia where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority and selected as the May Day Queen for Pi Kappa Phi's Atlanta division. A model at a young age, and deemed 'the most beautiful girl in Atlanta' by her husband, she graced the runways in Atlanta and Richmond as well as, the pages of Seventeen, Sports Illustrated and numerous other publications. She was the first model chosen in Seventeen's 'Miss Young America' series and was awarded the opportunity to travel to Paris with the publication. She won the heart of her husband of 62 years, Richard 'Dick' Sage, on the beach with friends. As he played his guitar and sang for the group, she began to harmonize. Their fate was sealed and they married shortly thereafter. They began their married life in Atlanta, giving birth to their son before moving to Richmond and welcoming three daughters. They enjoyed many trips abroad throughout their marriage but their favorite trips were always to the Sea Pines Resort in Hilton Head Island with the family. The many traditions and memories created are still enjoyed and passed down to each generation. A legacy none of us take lightly. When not traveling, they enjoyed life on their farm in Manakin Sabot. Gathering eggs from the chickens or sitting on the porch surrounded by her dogs and cats while watching activity on the pond, were a few of Mom's favorites. In Richmond she was actively involved with the community, volunteering on the Retreat Hospital Junior Board, the Council Shop at VMFA, Tuckahoe Women's Club, Goochland Garden Club, altar guild at St. Mary's Episcopal Church as well as a member at Deep Run Hunt Club. She was actively involved in her children's schools, often spearheading or crafting for fundraisers. As a loyal grandparent, she loved supporting her grandchildren in whatever they were involved in - be it sports, arts or music. With all of her accomplishments, she was best known for her elegance, grace, kindness, charm and witty/easy humor. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Askew Hammond; sister, Betty Jo 'Dodie' Bowen; brother in law, Frank Bowen; and husband, Richard A Sage. She is survived by her four children, Richard A. Sage, Jr (Lori), Kathryn Oden (Mike), Ansley Gift (Jim) and Laura Stewart (Mike) as well as seven grandchildren and five (soon to be six) great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the staff at Westminster Canterbury for taking such good care of our mother over the last couple of years. We would also like to thank her private nurse, Mercy and lead nurse Zelma, for their exceptional and loving care. A service will be held at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 12291 River Road on Monday, June 2, 2025 at 11 a.m. Private burial. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mary's Episcopal Church River Road or Goochland Animal Shelter, 1900 Hidden Rock Lane Maidens, VA 23102.
