Patteson Branch Obituary

BRANCH, Patteson, Jr., passed away on August 7, 2022, after a courageous battle with a rare lung disorder. Pat was diagnosed in 2012 and had a double lung transplant at Duke University Hospital in November 2021. Very few people knew of Pat's illness because he was never one to complain or bring attention to himself. He approached his recovery with strength and determination, aspiring for more time with friends and family. The transplant allowed Pat to regain his strength, his wonderful sense of humor and his fabulous smile.

Pat was known for being a devoted father and family member. He was kind, fun-loving and looked for the positive things in life. He was quick to laugh at himself and joke with others. He enjoyed taking walks, biking, golf, waterskiing, fishing, boating and camping. He spent many years going to Seal Team Boot Camp, as well as weightlifting at St. Christopher's School. With each activity, he often enlisted a family member.

Born on April 11, 1947, Pat was the son of Patteson Branch and Carlisle Morrissett Branch. He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Patricia "Tricia" Bullock Branch; his five children, Patteson Branch III (Eliza), Tyler Branch Hickey, Anne Beverly Branch Fuller (Burton), Reed Barton and Margaret Barton; and eight grandchildren, Patteson, Alice and Charlie Branch, Carlisle and Parker Hickey and Sutton, Ellie and Wally Fuller. He is also survived by his three brothers, David (Catherine), Carlisle (Deborah) and Christopher (Martha); his sister, Marti Alexander (Jim); and his nephews, David (Kathleen), Cole (Jessica), Will and Thomas Branch, Jamie (Priscilla), Marshall (Laura) and Christopher Alexander (Julian). Other survivors include Beverly Bland Branch, Read Branch (Jody), Russell Branch (Sally), Katie Durham (Arch), Mary Mason Converse, Mate Converse-Schultz, Carol Converse Garst and Martha Converse Wheeler (Harry).

Pat attended St. Christopher's from kindergarten through graduation in 1965. He graduated from Virginia Military Institute in 1969. He enjoyed wrestling in both schools. He especially cherished his friends from St. Christopher's and VMI.

After college, Pat served as an Artillery Officer in the U.S. Army. He began his career in 1973 with his family's investment firm, Branch & Company. In 1976, Pat joined Wheat First Securities, and then moved to Davenport & Company in 1983, where he practiced as a Certified Financial Planner and Senior Vice President of Investments. Pat was energized by working with clients and engaging with friends.

Pat served on The Cabell Foundation for 37 years, most recently as President of its Board. He took great joy in helping others and serving the nonprofit community.

Pat was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, The Country Club of Virginia and The Richmond German.

We thank all the physicians and staff who helped Pat through the years, especially the Transplant Team at Duke.

A celebration of Pat's life will be held at St. Stephen's Church on Thursday, August 18, 2022, at 11 a.m. with a reception immediately following at The Country Club of Virginia.

Donations in Pat's memory may be made to St. Stephen's or a charity of your choice.

I have spent nearly four decades in nonprofit administration. Pat's influence on nonprofits helped create a landscape of cooperation, creativity, and purposefulness among organizations big and small. He was one of the nicest, most encouraging people in the nonprofit world. My thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.

I have known Pat since I was a young man. He was always kind, had an uplifting smile that would lite up a room, and that wry sense of humor was something that I came to love about him. He came to to my Mother's service a few years ago and it meant the world to me. I will miss him.

I was saddened to hear of Pat's passing and will keep the Branch family in my thoughts and prayers. I enjoyed many conversations with Pat over the years discussing investments and catching up on family activities. He was always a delight to chat with and had a sunny disposition and ready smile.

He will be missed by all that knew him.

Although I haven't been close to Pat in recent years, I was always very fond of him and respected his spirit throughout our time together at St. C. In our earlier years together, we were in the same car pool. He will be missed by everyone who knew him.
