Peter Paluzsay Obituary

PALUZSAY, Peter L., passed away on October 29, 2008 at the age of 71, living his dream of traveling around the world. While cruising through the Black Sea just days before his passing, he said, "This is the trip of a lifetime." He died unexpectedly of a heart attack while exploring ancient ruins in Priene, Turkey. Following the communist suppression of the Hungarian Revolution, Mr. Paluzsay emigrated from his homeland of Hungary in 1956. He quickly adopted the United States where he developed an undying love for the opportunities that it offered to the honest and the hard working. In 1963, he founded Colonial Electric Company which they operated for over 45 years. In 1988, he and his wife, Beckie, started Ewell Station Shopping Center in Williamburg, which they continued to operate until retiring in 2006. In recent years, he discovered the internet, which brought the world to his fingertips and triggered his passion for traveling. He is survived by Beckie, his wife of 45 years; his daughter, Maria Paluzsay and husband, David Byrd; his son, Michael Paluzsay and wife, Nga Paluzsay; and two grandchildren, Katherine Elizabeth and David Thomas Byrd. A close and honored friend put it best when he said, "To really know Peter was to love him. He was a man of great principle, passion, humor, sense of self, and just plain good sense." A funeral mass will be held for Mr. Paluzsay at the William & Mary Catholic Campus Ministry Chapel in Williamsburg, Virginia at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, November 11. Nelsen Funeral Home of Williamsburg is entrusted with the arrangements. Online condolences may be registered at www.nelsencares.com.

Every body says I am so much like you. Wish I could've been old enough to understand why. Also, why is my full name on there? Ewww...

Hey, I'm Katherine Byrd but call me Katie. Thank you so much for talking about him. I'm always told I'm so much like him but I never understood that till I started researching. I finally understand now when people, especially my mom, say this. He passed away before I really got to know him but I remember a few things. One Christmas where we surprised him with a giant chocolate bar and him smiling ear to ear. I was doing the same cause I was a tiny three-year-old and carrying something double my size over to him. I remember going to the beach and my Cinderella boogie board (is that how you spell that?) going out in the ocean. He went out and got it for me cause it was a bit too far away. Sometimes when something memorable happens in my life, there is this presence. I'm sure now that it's him. Thank you again.

Dear Becky , Missy and Michael,
It was devastating news to hear of Peter's passing. The few years of my interaction with him have been very rewarding, as well as challenging, just because of his remarkable passion and intelligence. His convictions and spirit were the foundation for his strong character. He met every challenge without hesitation and with such zeal. I will sorely miss his company, and poignant conversations which clearly defined the man the world knew as Peter Paluzsay.
God Bless.

Although I met Peter through business, I quickly came to think of him as my friend. He fought hard for what he believed in and was fiercely loyal to those he cared for. He had a young spirit and there was always a sparkle in his eye when he spoke of his "girlfriend" Beckie, his wife of many years. I will miss my friend, Peter.
