Ralph Harvard Obituary

Ralph Oberry Harvard Jr., age 81, of Richmond and Pungoteague, Virginia, died on May 26, 2005. Son of the late Louise Hall and Ralph Oberry Harvard of Cochran, Georgia, he was born on February 9, 1924, in Richmond, Virginia. He attended Virginia Military Institute before leaving to serve in WWII. As a lieutenant in the United States Army Air Force, he flew 32 missions in the Pacific Theater. He graduated from the University of Richmond. He was married to the late Conway Fleming Harvard for 42 years. Mr. Harvard began working as a real estate appraiser at Harrison & Bates and spent the majority of his career as a senior executive at Virginia Federal Savings & Loan. He was a member of the Downtown Rotary Club in Richmond, the Country Club of Virginia and the American Friends of the Georgian Group. Mr. Harvard was a member of St. George's Episcopal Church in Pungoteague, Virginia. He is survived by his sister, Betty Lewis Bray of Richmond; two sons, Ralph Oberry Harvard III of New York City and Scott Christian Harvard of Pungoteague; and a daughter, Elizabeth Lewis Harvard of Charlottesville; daughters-in-law, Clifford Dunlop and Katharine McFarland; and five grandchildren, Holland Fleming, Ralph Oberry IV, Katharine Louise, William Scott and Hannah Conway. A graveside service will be held on Monday, May 30, 2005, at 11 a.m. at Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to St. George's Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 170, Pungoteague, Virginia 23422. Arrangements by the Williams Funeral Homes, Parksley, Va. and Onancock, Va.

Many years ago I knew Ralph, and Betty, and Mary Hall Pollard. I worked at the Virginia State Library, and they befriended me at their home on Confederate Avenue.I have fond memories. - Marvin Evans

I knew Ralph Harvard for 20 years as he was my wife's uncle. To me, Ralph was the epitome of the Southern Gentleman. Always kind and courteous. Just a great man to be around. He immediately took me in as a member of the extended family. He will be greatly missed by all family and friends.
