Richard Martin Obituary

Richard Martin

Sep 10, 1942 - Jun 28, 2024

Richard DeWayne Martin was welcomed into heaven by Jesus; his parents, Roy and Veronica Martin of Roanoke, VA; and his grandparents, Albert and Annie Martin and Eva Smith Lacy.

Richard is survived by his wife of 59 years, Winifred (Winkie) Martin; three children, Melissa Vath (Marc), Hunter Martin (Allyson), and Blake Martin; six grandchildren who knew him as Boppy, Ann-Katherine Vath Perdue (Taylor), Mallory Martin Crain (Taylor), Courtland Martin Thomas (Travis), Andy Vath, Alex Vath, and Palmer Martin (Maddie); and eight great-grandchildren.

Born on September 10, 1942, in Roanoke County, VA, Richard attended Jefferson High School and Roanoke College. He graduated from the Medical College of Virginia's School of Pharmacy in 1967. He began his pharmacy career with Standard Drug and later worked for CVS, retiring from long-term healthcare in 2008 but continuing part-time work. He received the AH Robins "Bowl of Hygeia" Award and Standard Drug Employee of the Year Award in 1991.

Richard spent much of his free time working in the PTA, serving as president of several PTAs, at the state level as President of the Virginia PTA, and on the National PTA Board. He was active in local and state advisory councils and served on the Henrico County Planning Commission and the Henrico Schools Health Advisory Council.

A devoted member of Hatcher Memorial Baptist Church for 43 years, Richard served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, and Training Director. At Gayton Baptist, he continued his ministry work and participated in mission trips.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gayton Baptist Care Ministry or St. Jude's Hospital. A celebration of life will be held Tuesday, July 9, 5 to 7 p.m. at Gayton Church, 13501 N Gayton Road. The family is being served by the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home.

I was very sorry to hear of Richard's passing. He was a good man. He was a man of deep faith and genuinely cared about other people. During a stressful point in my life, he and other members of a men's prayer group prayed for me and that meant a great deal. I was unable to attend the funeral, but I wanted to express my deepest condolences to Richard's family. May your memories of him give you comfort in this time.

PTA President - Easiest job in the PTA was one of my first workshops when I started PTA in 1988 and Roanoke 1989 was my first convention. Richard was a treasure to those of us who had the blessing to know him. PS did not learn to be a good delegator - I needed to take his workshop more often. As your family gathers may many stories bring you joy and laughter.

I was shocked to hear of Richard´s passing. He was such a bright light in PTA for so many years, I guess I thought he would be with us forever! He was state president when I first started participating on the state level. He was a wonderful friend and mentor . My heart goes out to his entire family. God´s blessings to you all.

When our girls were little, Richard was a great help with how to treat colds etc. instead of having to go to the doctor for everything. This was at Standard Drug in Lakeside. So sorry for your loss. Prayers and blessings.

Richard was my SS teacher during my early years at Hatcher. I saw him a couple of years ago when visiting Gayton and we reminisced. He will be missed.

Hunter, you may not remember me from Brookland Middle School, but you were an awesome "little boy" and I had the privilege of meeting your Dad at then Standard Drug and what became CVS-and worked with him through the PTA at BMS! He was so very kind and friendly and my heart goes out to you and all of his family. I will keep all of you in my thoughts and prayers.
