Dr. Richard Whittington McKenzie

MCKENZIE, Dr. Richard Whittington, was born in Guyana. He was the 12th child of Rufus and Muriel McKenzie and beloved husband of Esme McKenzie nee Joe. In 1972, he was granted an athletic scholarship to Fisk University, where he gained a bachelor's degree in mathematics. He earned his master's degree in mathematics at Texas Tech University, followed by a bachelor's degree in computer science at Devry University. He went on to earn his Master of Education at University of Texas at Arrington. He was granted a Doctorate in Education at Virginia State University in 2008. Richard had a love of education. He taught school in Guyana at a young age and at Texas Tech University while a graduate student. He worked as a computer programmer in Little Rock, Arkansas. He worked as a math teacher and advanced to Vice Principal in Texas Public Schools. He served Surry County Schools for over 18 years as both Vice Principal and the Director of Assessment and Accountability. He served as President of the Virginia State University Alumni Association. Richard was a long-standing Mason and was also devoted to his family and the Lord. Richard is survived by his wife, Esme, of 43 years; brothers, Joseph McKenzie of England, Frank McKenzie of New York; sister, Josephine Patterson nee McKenzie of Guyana; cousin, Arianna Caldeira of California; devoted nephew, Isaac Linton; as well as numerous other cousins, nieces and nephews. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Rufus and Muriel McKenzie; and eight siblings. As his brother, Joseph says, "Richard was a decent human being who would walk a mile or more with you." He was always encouraging and he loved progress. He fostered ambition with generosity and he touched and helped to change many lives. Richard was truthful, just, kind, humble and honest. He was well-loved and will be truly missed. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., May 13, 2023, at Bliley's, 8510 Staples Mill Road, in Richmond, Va.
