Robert FORD Obituary

FORD, Mr. Robert S. "Bobby," age 67, of Ebony, and formerly of Lawrenceville, died Wednesday, July 20, 2011 after a four-year battle with Lymphoma. He was born January 8, 1944 to William "Willie" Henry and Louise Moseley Ford. Bobby is survived by his very caring wife of 43 years, Elizabeth Yancey Ford; four children, Elizabeth F. Stephenson and husband, Jay, Robert Gregory Ford and wife, Jennifer, all of Charlotte, N.C., Lynne Meredith Y. Owen and husband, Eric, of Richmond, and William Stuart Ford of Ebony; eight grandchildren, Carson Ford, Elizabeth Stephenson, Ford Stephenson, Robert Ford, Spencer Owen, Hudson Owen, Hugh Stephenson and Hank Ford; and a sister, Mary Anne Ford Harris of Williamsburg. Bobby grew up on the family dairy "Springbank Farm" and graduated from Brunswick High School in 1962. He attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) as a member of the Corps of Cadets, where he attained the rank of Company Commander and graduated in 1966 with a Bachelor of Science degree. After graduation, Bobby entered the Army Quarter Master School at Fort Lee and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant. After training, he serviced a tour of duty in Vietnam and was promoted to rank of First Lieutenant. Completing his military obligations, Bobby entered the banking industry where he worked for the next 39 years. His career included tenures at The Bank of Brunswick, Virginia National Bank, Nations Bank, where he served as senior vice president, and finally the Bank of Southside Virginia, where he served as vice president until he retired in 2007. During his retirement, he enjoyed the outdoors by spending time on the farm building his wildlife and hunting preserve. A memorial service will be conducted Sunday at 3 p.m. at Prospect United Methodist Church in Ebony, Va. The family will receive friends Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Ebony Volunteer Fire Department, 497 Robinson Ferry Road, Ebony, Va.; The Prospect United Methodist Church Building Fund, 1974 Ebony Road, Ebony, Va. 23845; Community Memorial Oncology Clinic, P.O. Bobby and I worked on many projects that have become reality in Brunswick County. While we did not always agree, we both shared the hope of a better future for Brunswick County. When you shake hands with Bobby Ford you did not need a written contract. You could always expect to receive a 100% effort and desire to see a project through from start to finish.

I was so sorry to read about your loss. Bobby and I graduated from Brunswick High in 1962. I had seen him a couple of times since then when by mother worked @ the original Bank of Alberta and he was in the bank in Lawrenceville. II was looking forward to seeing him when we have our 50th high school reunion(not that far off).

Betsy and Family,
I was deeply saddened when J.S. called and told me of Bobby's passing. I am on my way home from Florida, so I can't be with you in person, but you all are in my heart and prayers. There are so many good memories. We were truly blessed to have him. May those memories and the knowledge that he is with God bring you comfort.

My thoughts and prayers are with Bobby's family. Although I haven't seen him since we were in the same company at ROTC Summer Camp at Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania, in the summer of 1965, I will always remember him as a witty, thoughtful person. He will be missed. The good ones always die before their time.
