Robert Leslie Hammond

Robert Leslie Hammond, 81, of Tappahannock, died Friday, May 28, 2004. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Madeline Hammond. He was a building contractor for over 60 years, the last 20, as co-owner of Hammond Brothers, Inc. The favorite part of his work was restoring old homes. He was an active member of Beale Memorial Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, chairman of the building committee, Sunday school teacher, superintendent of Sunday school, and was a trustee of the Baptist Homes. He was a Past Master of Arlington Lodge #102 AF&AM, past president and treasurer of The Building Association and a World War II Naval veteran. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Hammond Ball of Tappahannock, and Helen Hammond Head of Cleveland, Ohio; two brothers, William Richard Hammond, and Edward Lewis Hammond, both of Tappahannock; one sister, Elizabeth Merteen Revere of Newport News; three grandsons, Hunter Harrison Head, Robert Leslie Hammond III, and Christopher Page Ball. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Marks-Bristow Funeral Home, Tappahannock. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday in Beale Memorial Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Essex Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Beale Memorial Baptist Church, P.O. Box 816, Tappahannock, Va. 22560.
