Robert Krug Obituary

KRUG Dr. Robert Krug, 88, of Irvington, Va., died Sunday, October 29, 2006, at Rappahannock General Hospital. Born July 23, 1918, in Richmond, Va., Robert was the son of Uldine V. and Charles F. Krug. The greatest love of his life, his wife of 64 years, Kathryn Rebecca Leviston Krug, preceded him in death this past March. Following the couple's marriage on June 21, 1941, they resided in Richmond, Va., Columbus, Ohio, Yeadon, Pa., Lexington, Va., Blacksburg, Va., Fairfax, Va., Nelson County, Va., (Afton) and the last 20 years in the Tidewater area of Virginia. Robert received his Bachelor of Science from the University of Richmond, his Master of Science from Pennsylvania State University, and his doctorate in chemistry from the Ohio State University. During World War II, he pursued research which led to improving the fuel efficiency of aviation fuel. As a research chemist for Atlantic Richfield in Philadelphia, he was granted a patent for "Desulfurization of Hydrocarbons with Boron Phosphate-Alumina Catalyst." In 1949, Robert served as professor of chemistry at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. In 1950, he joined the faculty of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University where he later became chairman of the Department of Chemistry and was the first recipient of the W.E. Wine Award for excellence in teaching. In 1965, Robert joined George Mason Community College as Dean of Faculty and Professor Emeritus of chemistry. Later, when the school became independent of the University of Virginia, he became Vice President of Academic Affairs and later, third University President of George Mason University. In January of 1980, the Board of Visitors recognized Robert's 14 years of academic service by naming one of the original buildings of the University, "Krug Hall." Throughout his life and into retirement, Robert and his family enjoyed spending time in the mountains and raising cattle. Robert was an avid hunter and investor; he enjoyed a wide variety of music, golfing, working on the family cars, and carrying out "family togetherness outings" which later became the "stuff" of family folk lore. Robert was a devoted deacon and elder at Blacksburg Presbyterian Church and Providence Presbyterian Church in Fairfax. During his years in the Tidewater area, Robert served as Lay Reader and Senior Warden of Abingdon Episcopal Church. An active civic leader, Robert was President of the Fairfax Club of Rotary International, and while serving on the Middle Peninsula-Northern Neck Community Services Board, he devoted time, knowledge and support to promote services for and dignified treatment of the mentally disabled. While living at Rappahannock Westmin-ster-Canterbury, Robert proudly served on the Board of Directors of the Res-idents' Association. Robert is most remembered for his devotion to his "first lady" Kathryn, his family, many cherished friends and the students he taught over the years. He is survived and forever loved by daughter, Robyn K. Quaid; son, Charles J. Krug and wife, Patricia; four grandchildren, Elizabeth A. Krug, Robert L. Krug, Kathryn M. Quaid and Andrea R. Quaid; and two great-grandchildren, Tasha C. Krug and Connor J. Krug. Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Hugh White, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 1, 2006 at Abingdon Episcopal Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. A reception will be held at 4 p.m. at Rappahannock Westmin-ster-Canterbury. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Kilmarnock Lancaster Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 333, Kilmarnock, Va. 22482; "RW-C Foundation," Rappahan-nock Westminster-Canter-bury, 132 Lancaster Drive, Irvington, Va., 22480 or Abingdon Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 82, White Marsh, Va. 23183.
