Robert Talbert Obituary

Robert Talbert

Robert Martin Talbert, Ph.D., 88, of Powhatan, Va., passed away peacefully on April 30, 2025.

Bob was born February 2, 1937, and raised in Franconia, Virginia., as well as childhood years in the Panama Canal Zone. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond M. and Elizabeth M. Talbert, and his brother Richard T. Talbert. He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 65 years, Nancy Talbert; two sons, Steve Talbert (Olevia) and Mike Talbert (Julie); three grandsons, Robert Talbert (Katie), Bryan Talbert (Kelsey) and Justin Talbert; and two delightful great-grandchildren, Claire Talbert and Theodore Talbert. Dr. Talbert was a Professor Emeritus at Virginia Commonwealth University in the departments of History and Philosophy and Religious Studies. He joined VCU in 1969 and retired in 2001. Bob was always well respected by his students and colleagues alike, known for his engaging lectures on biblical, ancient near east and ancient Egyptian history, which were always accompanied by his own photography from his extensive travels to those historical sites. During his tenure he was recognized with an Outstanding Faculty award in the College of Humanities and Sciences. He was also well known throughout his career and afterward around numerous Richmond area churches as a frequent Sunday School speaker on biblical history. Outside the classroom Bob was an avid fisherman and quail hunter, always accompanied in the field by his beloved English Setters. He was a former president of the Central Virginia Chapter of Quail Unlimited and was active in habitat restoration.

The family will receive friends 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, May 3rd, at Bennett & Barden Funeral Home in Powhatan. A graveside service will follow in Powhatan Community Cemetery.

Dr. Talbert was one of the people I admired most in the world. We are so much the poorer that he is no longer here.

Dr Talbert was my advisor and professor in several near eastern ancient courses. He was so fascinating and I am a lifelong Egyptology enthusiast. I accompanied Bob, Nancy and Dr & Mrs Tom Hall on a 22 day trip to Egypt and the Holy Land in 1978. We climbed the Cheops Pyramid and slept in tombs in Petra. My sympathy to Nancy and family. Verna

I had the pleasure of being a student of Dr. Talbert in the late 1990´s as I took 5 classes with him. I always respected him so much for his wisdom and enjoyed getting to know him more and more. My favorite memory was going to an Egyptian event in Washington D.C. with him and another student. My last day when I was graduating VCU, I gave him a large picture of the Egyptian pyramids that I found at a store at Willow Lawn shopping center. After saying goodbye as I would be moving to Florida, I went to the local park and felt as sad as I am now. However, the next 25 years I made sure to always call him on his birthday February 2nd. He was a very special professor and person that I´ll never forget. My deepest condolences to his family that I always heard so much about. I´m so glad to have gotten to know Mrs. Talbert over the years.
