Robert Charles Temps
Robert "Bob" Charles Temps passed away at home with his family present, on July 4, 2025, at the age of 94. He was preceded in death by his parents Herman Willis Temps and Sarah Evelyn Temps. He is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Jeanne Temps (nee McLaughlin); daughter Jeanne Temps Barber (Jeff); and son Robert R. Temps. He is also survived by his younger brother John Temps, Sr. (Harriet); grandson Alan Barber (Gillian Owen); and nephews Jonathan Temps (Dana) and John Temps, II (Jenny).
Bob was born and raised in the borough of Queens in New York City. As a young boy he enjoyed spending summers in the Pocono Mountains where relatives ran summer boarding houses in Meisertown, Pa. He was an avid reader of adventure and travel books and dreamed of traveling the world when an adult. He chose his career to do just that, graduating from Lehigh University in 1953 with a degree in Mining Engineering. In the span of 11 years after graduation, he and Jeanne lived in Minnesota (where their two children were born), Canada, Chile, Utah, arriving in Richmond in 1964. By the end of his professional career he had more than fulfilled his dream of travel having visited roughly 50 countries spanning six continents for work-related activities. He added several more countries through leisure travel with Jeanne.
Bob and Jeanne were high school sweethearts. They met at a Baptist youth group meeting where Bob caught Jeanne's eye while playing the piano (Jeanne being an accomplished piano player herself). She introduced herself to him, something that he admitted in later years he was eternally grateful for because he hadn't the nerve to talk to her first. They were married in August of 1952, between Bob's junior and senior year at Lehigh University.
Aside from travel, at various times, Bob had enjoyed fishing and hunting, boating, camping, square dancing, family genealogy, bird watching, and his HO train layout.
Bob was a kind and modest man and cared very much for his family. He had an excellent sense of humor and was known to be mischievous at times. Bob was a man of faith and he firmly believed in giving back what was so abundantly given to him, which he and Jeanne did through support of various charities and organizations over many years. He was a member of Second Baptist Church and the Joy Sunday School class. In the Bible that Bob kept on his night table, he had bookmarked and noted John 5.24-29, which speaks to the resurrected and eternal life through Christ. It is reassuring to know that Bob is now with his Heavenly Father.
The family will receive friends on Saturday August 2, 2025 from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., at the Parham Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Road, Richmond, Va. 23229.
