Robert Traylor Obituary

TRAYLOR, JR., Robert Woodrow, Robert Woodrow Traylor Jr. 75 of Richmond passed away on December 26, 2023. After years of enduring the ravages of Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis, he is free and with God. Woody was born on November 29, 1948 to Robert Woodrow Traylor and Nell Adams Traylor in Danville, VA. After graduating from George Washington H.S. in Danville, he entered the University of Richmond as a Williams scholar. Woody graduated Phi Beta Kappa in the class of 1971. He was student body president of Richmond College and was elected to Omicron Delta Kappa. It is at U of R that he met Pat Howard, now his wife of fifty two years.

Graduate school at Florida State University came next and it is there that he became the Seminoles #1 fan for life. So many happy family memories revolve around the four of us attending FSU football games. In addition to Noles football, he loved U of R and ACC basketball -- so much so that when Pat went into labor (with twins) while watching the ACC tournament, he did not take her to the hospital until halftime.

Woody was an avid sports fan and a pretty decent tennis player until MS took that away. His other interests included movies (especially the old classics) and politics. Woody's entire career was in telecommunications. He worked for C&P of Virginia, Bell Atlantic, MCI (Director of Regulatory Affairs), and ended his career as Vice President of Zephion until MS forced him to retire at age 52.

Woody was a man of great integrity who fought his long health battle with strength, dignity, and grace. He had a strong faith in God that was evidenced by the plaque given to him by his minister. It reads "Your walk with God has an impact on many lives...mine is one of them."

He was predeceased by his parents and his two sisters, Diane Henry and Linda Pagel. Woody was a loving husband and best friend to Pat. He was a devoted father to sons Chris (Cristin) and Gray (Bonney) as well as an adoring grandfather to Evan, Cole, Alexis, Bowden, and Luke.

At Woody's request he will be remembered at a small family gathering and a donation will be sent to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society to be used for research into a cure.

If you so choose, a memorial contribution in his name may be made to the National MS Society (nationalmssociety.org)

I had been thinking of Woody and ran across this memorial. I will always remember Woody and the times that he and Wayne Owen and I spent at the YMCA playing basketball. Woody was one great guy. Ron Lovelace

Woody was a delightful guy who I knew in the 1990s through telecom standards bodies. I was just starting out in tech and he strongly recommended me to be hired at MCI, where my career began to soar. Although that was almost 30 years ago, I will always remember Woody as an exceptionally smart and genuinely charming guy whose generosity extended to many people including me. My condolences to his family and loved ones.

Pat, Woody and my husband Dana and I have tried over the years to get together to eat and play Dominoes whenever we were in the same or a nearby city. We always had a great time with lots of laughter. But we always lost...to Woody. He beat the pants off us. We will miss you Woody and know this world has lost someone very special with your passing. Heaven´s gain.
Much love, Lorraine Brown

I did not see Woody´s obituary in the paper so I am belatedly sending my sympathy and love to Pat and the family. His life was so impressive-without knowing him well I felt his positive impact on others and his lasting presence. Please know that I am keeping all of you in my heart.

Mike and I send our love to Pat and "the twins". We have many wonderful memories from Heritage Woods Lane in Midlothian, VA. Woody was a fine friend and neighbor.

A beautiful tribute to the bravest man ever. I will miss him greatly ,but I know he leaped into heaven and ran towards Jesus. God bless you all.
