Ruth Medley Obituary

MEDLEY, Ruth Fisher, Ruth Abbie Fisher Medley, 77, passed away peacefully at her home in Richmond, VA, on May 17, 2024. She was born on February 1, 1947, to parents Garland W. and Ruth DeJarnette Fisher. She was the only daughter, but she had two older brothers she loved dearly. Ruth graduated from Halifax County High School, Halifax, VA, in 1965 and graduated from Smithdeal Business in Richmond, VA, in 1967. Ruth had a successful career in the banking industry and retired as a Branch Manager from the then Wachovia Bank in 2001.

Ruth was a humble and quiet lady who showed kindness to everyone she met. She loved her family, her friends, and even the stranger on the street. She always had a smile to share with those she saw. She loved to travel to the beach every summer and whenever she was able, with her husband on business trips all around the United States. Ruth also loved to shop, even going to every shopping mall and store in West End Richmond to find that "perfect" dress or blouse, even if it took her weeks. In her mind, time spent shopping was never wasted time.

Ruth belonged to several organizations along with her husband. Some but not all of them included the South Boston Halifax County Museum of Fine Arts and History, the Halifax County Chamber of Commerce, the NRA, the National Wild Turkey Federation, Dukes Unlimited, and many others.

Ruth is survived by her husband, David R. Medley and their daughter, Michelle Leigh Medley. She is also survived by a brother, Richard M. Fisher (Dana) of Hurt, VA; former sister-in-law, Sandra Fisher Wells of Dinwiddie, VA; brother-in-law, Edwin Lee Medley (Rae) of Forest, VA; aunt, Gayle C. Medley of Clover, VA; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Ruth was a member of Second Baptist Church, River Road, Richmond, VA. A memorial service will be held on June 1, 2024 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church, Main Street, South Boston, VA. A reception will be held immediately following the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Second Baptist Church, 9614 River Road, Richmond, VA 23239, or Rogers Chapel Baptist Church, c/o George Anderson, Peter Trails, Clover, VA 24534, or First Baptist Church, 815 North Main Street, South Boston, VA 24592, or Republican Grove United Methodist Church, 4233 Leda Grove Rd., Nathalie, VA 24577, or a charity of your choice.

I met Ruth when I was 11. My granddaddy Herman DeJarnette was her Mom's brother. She was a lovely woman whom we would spend Christmas with when we would come up from Hampton, Va. I remember a lot of Granddaddys family The DeJarnettes. Rest in Peace Ruth Abbie
