Sandra Hastings "Sandy" Pasternak

PASTERNAK, Sandra Hastings "Sandy", 74, of Richmond, Va., passed away January 6, 2023. Sandy was born in Richmond, Va., to Hodges and Mildred (Clarke) Hastings. She graduated from Douglas S. Freeman High School. She was a graduate of Smithdeal Massey Business College and a proud active member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority. Sandy was an entrepreneur and business owner, starting and running Capitol Packaging with her husband Jack. Of the many jobs, businesses owned and occupations she held in her life, her most important role was that of being "Nana" to her grandchildren. She happily retired from her paying job as soon as the first grandchild was born. She made sure she was available to help care for her grandkids at a moment's notice. She was present at their recitals, soccer games and school functions. Sandy loved to travel and took every opportunity to do so. She enjoyed shagging to beach music. She was very social and loved attending and hosting parties. She loved home design, decorating her house for every season and was fearless in executing her vision. She was also a proud gardener and collector. At the beginning of the pandemic, she and Jack made Nags Head, N.C. their permanent home. She leaves behind her high school sweetheart, Jack, her husband of 52 years; and their three children, Dr. Ryan H. Pasternak and wife, Merisa, of New Orleans, La., Benjamin T. Pasternak of Richmond, Va. and Angela Pasternak Mercer and husband, James, of Midlothian, Va.; daughter-in law, Kelly Pasternak of Goochland, Va.; her grandchildren, Lorrin, McKenzie and Isabelle Mercer, Zachary and Evan Pasternak and Hayden Pasternak; her sister, Donna H. Deitz and husband, August "Andy," of Ashland, Va.; and many cousins, neices and nephews; and her sweet fur babies, Holly, Saylor and Kooper. The family will receive friends 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 11 at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 W. Broad St. Funeral services and entombment will follow at 2 p.m. at Westhampton Memorial Park Mausoleum.
