Rev. Sidney Sheltman Bowman

Rev. Sidney Sheltman Bowman, age 80, passed away Thursday, April 21, 2005 in Atlanta, Georgia. Witness to his life are his loving wife of 54 years, Annette Kimbro Bowman; and their four sons, Sidney Wade Bowman in Richmond, Va., Stephen Kimbro Bowman in Woodstock, Ga., Philip Law Bowman in Marietta, Ga. and Edgar Milton Bowman II in Colonial Heights, Va.; 12 grandchildren, and a supportive extended family. His life will be remembered by all as a Presbyterian USA ordained minister in the following churches: Chester Presbyterian, Chester, Va.; Franklin Presbyterian, Franklin, Va.; Calvary Presbyterian, Johnson City, Tenn.; and his continued service after his 28th year and his participation in his current church, Heritage Presbyterian Church of Woodstock, Ga. Sidney was born January 4, 1925 in Manhattan, New York City. His parents were in graduate school at Columbia University at that time. Sidney became a member of the greatest generation and served his country in the U.S. Army in World War II, fighting many of the most intense battles of history. He landed at Normandy Beach, participated in the Battle of the Bulge, and served in all five European campaigns. He was wounded in battle, received a Purple Heart, received a commission on the battlefield and became a company commander. After the war, he received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Virginia and a Master of Theology from the Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Va. He was recalled into military service during the Korean War. Because of his extensive earlier military service, he was deployed as an instructor in Ft. Knox, Ky. His parents and his only sister preceded him in death, Edgar Milton Bowman, Ph.D., who was a professor of Randolph Macon Women's College in Lynchburg, Va. and Ellen Sheltman Bowman, and Mary Claiborne Bowman Grice of Rockville, Md. Memorial services will be held Monday, April 25, 2005 at 7 p.m. from the Heritage Presbyterian Church. Rev. Sid Gunter will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6 to 6:45 p.m. at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Heritage Presbyterian Church, 5323 Bells Ferry Rd., Acworth, Georgia 30102.
