Stockton Watson Obituary

Stockton Tyler Watson

June 14, 1968 - May 28, 2025

Stockton Tyler Watson, Sr. passed away unexpectedly on May 28, 2025, at his home in Richmond, Virginia. Ironically, it was the very thing that we all knew and loved about Stock that would ultimately take him from us, an enlarged heart. In order to hold all that he loved in it equally it required a heart larger than life.

Stock was born on June 14, 1968, to Lina and Roddy Watson in Virginia Beach, Virginia where he spent most of his life.

He was a graduate of Norfolk Academy, Class of 1986, and Hampden-Sydney College, Class of 1990. Stock was a natural athlete and excelled in football, basketball, and lacrosse while at Norfolk Academy. He continued with his love of lacrosse as a member of Hampden-Sydney's Lacrosse team, serving as Captain his senior year. Stock had many passions in his life; music, sports, film, and politics, and even took up broadcasting Norfolk Academy and Hampden-Sydney lacrosse games with his good friend, coach, and mentor Tom Duquette. However, his greatest love was for his family and friends. He loved them all and always took great pride in each of their accomplishments. Stock was most proud of his sons, Roddy, Mac, and Stock and often spoke of how much he loved them, and he was excited to watch them grow as young men.

Stock is preceded in death by his father Roddy and stepmother Polly, his paternal grandparents, Ruth and Rudy Watson, his maternal grandparents, Caroline and Stocky Tyler, his uncle and godfather Big Mike and his stepsister Gray Todman. Left to carry on his memory are his sons, Roddy, Mac and Stock, his mother Lina Watson and stepfather Jack Byrd, his sister Wing, nephew Peyton and niece Caroline, his aunts Sallie Carter Tyler and Nelle Tyler McCabe, his cousin Michael and his wife Merrick and their daughters Helen, Sallie Carter and Betsy, and stepbrother John Todman and his wife Bryn and their son Marshall, as well as a host of other family and friends.

To know Stock was an amazing gift. He had an unparalleled ability to make everyone feel truly important, welcomed, and loved. He was a special blend of what we should all hope to be; kind and caring, honest and sincere, funny with impeccable timing, a great storyteller. He was loyal and steadfast to his "people", and if you were among them, consider yourself truly blessed.

A celebration of Stock's life well lived will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 18th at Galilee Church, 3928 Pacific Avenue, Virginia Beach, VA.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the B. Thomas Duquette Endowment for Lacrosse at Norfolk Academy, Chesapeake Bay Academy, Cape Henry Collegiate, or the charity of your choosing.

I only knew Stock when he was with the VA Dept. of Wildlife Resources for a short time, but it was a pleasure. He always had a smile and a kind word. My condolences to his family and friends.
