Susan Powell-Parker Obituary

POWELL-PARKER, Susan Reid, Powell-Parker, Susan, age 72, passed away on June 2, 2024, after a lengthy battle with COPD. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 29 years, Edwin W. Parker, Jr.; her stepson, Edwin W. Parker, III; her sister and brother-in-law, Betsy and Temple Mayo; and numerous nieces and nephews. Susan was preceded in death by her parents, Caroline Duvall Powell and Dr. John Williams Powell; her sibling, Anne Cabell Powell Maiden and Cabell's husband, Walden.

In childhood, Susan loved horseback riding and spent many hours at a neighbor's house riding and tending to their horses. She was always creative and especially skilled at drawing just about anything. Her sister marveled at how she could sketch a horse, dog, and even a person's face in minutes. Susan loved their dogs and was a long-time supporter of the SPCA.

She attended St. Catherine's School through eighth grade and graduated from Thomas Jefferson high school. She went on to graduate from Pan American Business School and landed a job in media. Susan loved her career in media including jobs at WWBT Channel 12, Raeford Parrish Advertising, and finally her own multi - media placement business. It crushed her when she was forced to retire due to COPD. She treasured her friendships with Toni Henderson and Paige Harvey, longtime friends from channel 12, who hung in there throughout her illness.

The interment at Hollywood Cemetery will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution to the Henrico Humane Society (henricohumane.org/donate).

Betsy and Temple, I am very sorry to hear about Susan passing away. Please accept my sincerest condolences. I moved in with Susan at Cardinal Forest Apartments when she needed a roommate, and I was looking for a place to live due to separation. I think we were roommates for about a year and half. We remained friends and used to go bar hopping for a long time. I was out with her the night she met Eddie. Eventually we lost touch with each other. Please pass my condolences on to Eddie. I am sending prayers your way.
