Susan Midkiff Reid
Susan Midkiff Reid died peacefully at home after a long illness on July 9, 2025, at the age of 87.
She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 64 years, J. William Reid; three children, Mary Courtney Reid (Pamela), Edward Midkiff Reid (Melissa), and J. William Reid, Jr. (Betsy); seven grandchildren, Sarah C., Martha, and Susan Palmentera-Reid Patrick and Sarah M. Reid and Will and Adair Reid. Susan was predeceased by her parents, Melvin and Bernardine Hafling Midkiff; and her sister, Joan Midkiff Farley Chappell.
Susan was born in Richmond, Va., on August 21, 1937. She grew up in Stonewall Court in Richmond, graduated from St. Gertrude High School in 1955 and the College of Notre Dame of Maryland in 1959. After college, she worked as a researcher in labs at Johns Hopkins University and Philip Morris.
Up until her illness, she enjoyed numerous reunions of both her high school and college, often serving as co-chair, and maintained many strong friendships, playing bridge with one group of friends for more than 50 years.
Susan was a dedicated mother and wonderful grandmother who loved her family and enjoyed many years of family vacations on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. She was an active member of her church and the community, serving as Parish Council Chair at St. Bridget Church, where she was a lifelong member; President of the River Road Hills Neighborhood Association, a volunteer with Reach to Recovery with the American Cancer Society; an active member of the Virginia Society for Human Life, Tuckahoe Woman's Club, Catholic Woman's Club and Virginia Interfaith Center. After raising her three children, Susan served as Director of Development for St. Bridget School for 10 years.
The family is very grateful to Caroline Ouko, Nattesha Morris, Princess Fred-Dyck, and the staff of Affinity Hospice Care for their outstanding care of Susan these past two and a half years.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Bridget Catholic Church on Wednesday, July 23, at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow. Interment in Hollywood Cemetery will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Bridget Catholic Church or the Greater Richmond
