Words cannot express my sadness for your family. I did not know COL Felts as a friend. However, at the time of his deployment I was an Captain/Infantry Officer in the Army leading a specialty platoon In Baghdad.
I was with COL Felts on patrol the day he and SPC Justin Garcia were taken from this world. Not a day goes by I don’t think of them and the events that occurred.
I will never forget you Sir. May you walk in peace with the lord.

Col Felts was my company commander when I was stationed in Augsburg, Germany. Then Capt Felts was an outstanding leader and set an example for us all to follow. COL Felts (Tom) and Family - I didn't know Tom personally, but I think of him often because our fates are connected. I was stationed at Ft. Leavenworth, KS in 2005 and was on orders to go to Iraq as an individual augmentee in early 2006. I received a call one day from the G3 telling me that a Colonel then in the SAMS course had volunteered to take my place and if it was OK with me, the HQ would rescind my orders. I had come back from a tour in Afghanistan in fall 2003, so I said that was fine. My wife and kids were of course happy to hear the news that I would not be deploying. My kids were in school on post and knew the Felts kids, so in 2006 when they heard and I heard about Tom being killed in action it was a huge shock because I realized - that was supposed to be me. I deployed to Iraq from 2008 - 2010, always wondering whether Tom's sacrifice in 2006 would be repaid by me. I retired from the Army in 2011, now live in Michigan and this year I had a brick paver engraved for Tom and installed at ourlocal Veterans Tribute (VTOTMI.ORG) to honor Tom's memory. I drive by it often and "salute" him. Mrs Felts and family, I hope this story and the picture of Tom's engraved paver in some way helps. Tom, I will not forget you.

Dear Col. Felts and family. Today my wife & I were visiting Sandston, VA and decided to visit the National Cemetary. There for an unknown reason we were drawn to your resting place and headstone. We had never met, but we knew we needed to learn more about you. You are NOT forgotten. Thank you & your family for your bravery and sacrifice to our great country. Col. Felts, I never served in the military, but reading through some of the entries on this site I know I would have wanted you as my leader and proudly served under you. Dear Kim and children,
We only recently learned of Tom's death, and just wanted you to know you are in our prayers. We have not forgotten you and remember when we first went to Leavenworth Baptist Church back in 1997, nervous about our first ministry home. You made us feel so welcome. We have thought of our many military friends over the years and wondered where they are and how they are doing. We can't find the words to say how much we appreciate Tom's service to his country, but most of all to His Lord and Savior. You will always be in our prayers.

I doubt you'll remember, but he invited my wife and I to your quarters 1988 at Ft campbell when I replaced him as the S2 in 1/327th. Y'all were heading off to Ft Huachuca. Better times, I'm sure. To the family of COL Thomas H. Felts Sr.,
I had the wonderful opportunity to serve with Col Felts at FOB Justice in Kadhimiya, Iraq in early-mid 2006. I worked in intelligence and supported his MITT team for a time.
Justice was a small base and I often had the opportunity to sit beside him in the dining facility and work out with him at the gym, both rare feats for a junior enlisted soldier. He was the most down-to-earth Colonel I have ever met. He often took my advice and looked to me as an equal rather than a lower ranking soldier. I remember standing beside him in the TOC one day and we suddenly began to receive mortar fire. He looked at me and said, "Wow. That's it? Hmph. I was expecting worse."
We always thought it was a bit odd to see his detachment going out with us; they were a motely crew of SFC's, CPT's, MAJ's and him being a Colonel and all. But, that was his personality. His troops went so he did too.
I never had a chance to salute him because of the environment we were in, but I salute him every day because I wear a memorial bracelet with his name on it.

Not one day has passed that I do not think of you and the dedication you showed to "changing the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people" while serving as a MiTT Advisor. I had the distinct honor to serve with you during that time. From the day I met you at the airport in Ft. Hood as you introduced yourself as my boss, to the very minute of this day, I truly believe I served with one of the greatest leaders in our Army. You consistently provided mentorship, not only to your Iraqi counterpart, but to your MiTTs, on a daily basis.
In 2006, prior to returning to my home station, I was presented a commemorative coin in your honor. The coin has remained on me every day since the presentation. My daughters asked why do I always carry it with me and I explained to them that it is remembrance of a true hero who rightly deserves to be remembered and honored every day.
Thank you COL Felts. It is truly an honor to have served with and known such a great leader.

I mounted my Harley this week for the lone ride to the wall to pay my respects and remember you, Justin, and the 4000 + other soldiers who's names are inscribed thereon this Veterans Day. So… my dads dead. Not quite the opening line you expected, right? But the truth is always surprising, like how surprised I was to be woken up at 6:30 in the morning by my bawling sister who I follow into the living room just to find out my life was forever changed. Like how surprised I was to find out I was going to be moving across the country. How about how surprised I was when I discovered high school wasn’t the scholastic adventure I had up to then enjoyed but rather real work! Or even the surprise that I really did miss my sisters who were going off to college. 2006 was as much a year I will always remember as it is one I so desperately wish I could forget. In February my dad deployed to Iraq where he was supposed to be training the Iraqi soldiers. I had just started the 8th grade and was still getting used to being a teenager when I got news that my father had been killed in action. When they first told me though I just went numb and didn’t start crying until the thought crossed my mind that my mother now had no one to grow old with. Sure it’s hard thinking of all the memories I’ll never get to share with my father like the talk on the only thing boys are after, or the dancing at my wedding. But still what hurts me the most is thinking of the things those I love will never get to have with him like he will never get to hold my older sisters babies, or go to my brothers soccer games, or even just that he will never again hold my mom’s hand in the car. It’s the little details like that, the moments we never really thought as sacrifices while he was still here, that are the hardest to handle daily. My father was a great man, the greatest man. My mom always says the reason it’s hard for me to find a boyfriend is that I’m looking for someone as great as my dad, and men like that are rare. Men like my father come once in a lifetime and I am blessed and proud to say that that man was not only in my lifetime but also in my life! As easy as it would be to cry everyday and fear this world, I can’t do that, the faith I have in God that was given to my by my dad’s undying love for the Lord won’t let me do that. It’s defiantly awkward when friends ask me what my dad does for a living and I have to tell them what he used to do, but still I’ve never been ashamed to say what my father died for. He volunteered for that position knowing the risk and left all of us with memories of him laughing and loving. That might just be what I miss the most is his smile. My dad had five different smiles. One when the air started getting cold outside, one when he was thinking of my Granddaddy, one when he thought something was truly hilarious, one when he could feel the love of his children, and one when he looked at my mom. Each smile brought a new light into the room and I can only hope to influence others one day the way my dad influenced me. The man made me who I am and influences me daily. Sadly I didn’t know that though until he was already gone. If I could see my dad one more time I would hug him for the last time and tell him not to worry that I understood why he had to go and why God had to take him from us so early. The way I see it he was too much of an angel to be on Earth anymore.

Thomas Felts,
When I met you I was Private First Class Parsons and I was was your driver/Intel Analyst. You were the III Corps/Fort Hood G2 ACE Chief and with just a few select words you made a lasting impact on my leadership style. ("THE PERSON IN CHARGE IS THE PERSON WITH THE RIGHT ANSWER.") I remember so vividly those conversations we would have about work, family, etc. and how you would tell me there is nothing more important in this life than your family and the positive impact you have on others.
When I had received word of your passing I uncontrollably broke down and cried, I could not believe that another great leader was taken from us.
Thomas Felts I want you to know that I will do my best to never let what knowledge you passed me fade and that I will continue to spread your message until we meet again.
As now I stand here Master Sergeant Parsons I will use your words to guide my leadership and I will continue to tell my soldiers the legacy of Thomas Felts and how he believed that one man can make a difference, how important training is to preparing soldiers for worst case scenario, and how THE PERSON IN CHARGE IS THE PERSON WITH THE RIGHT ANSWER!

COL Tom Felts and I served together back at Fort Hood, Texas during the 2000-2001 timeframe. In fact, I was his company commander because he served as the III Corps ACE Chief which was part of my company. He always moved to the sound of the guns to get the mission accomplish and always took care of his soldiers. I was serving a 15 month deployment in Iraq the day COL Felts went home to be with GOD. I can truly tell you that it was the hardest day of my 15 month deployment when I learned of his death. I had an opportunity to talk with him while I was at the Command General and Staff College as a student in 05 prior to him being deployed to Iraq and never thought it would be my last time speaking with him. My heart and prayers are with his family and COL Felts will always be missed. He was a true warrior and leader.

Its been an honored to serve with you as one of your MITT team. Till this day I will always remember the day you pined me as a Captain rank while we waited at the CIF line at Ft Hood, to draw our equipment. The day you counseled me at Camp Taji, Iraq and you offered me a cigar and you showed me the pictures of your family. I remember two of my teammates got into an arguement and wanted to sort it out with you once you return from your convoy. Little did we know that night was last and longest night for all of us. You are by best, the greatest leader i've known and the world is a lesser place without you.

Felts family, i served with then LTC Felts with the 319 MI BN back in 2001-2002. I was his Bn Air NCO. My first impression of him was of a hard charging Bn CDR. He called me looking for information about becoming a jumpmaster prior to him taking command. I told him what he needed to know and advised him that it would be difficult. To make a long story short, we made 7 jumps in 5 days. The next day, he went to Jumpmaster School and graduated 15 days later. His philosophy was to lead from the front. Something we all respected. He will be missed....

Dear Family,
I served with Col. Felts at FOB Justice. Just the day before he was killed I saw him chasing Barney ( the FOB's pet dog) away from some Iraqi soldiers that the dog had been barking at. It was a sight to see a Col. chasing a dog. Col. Felts was a great man, and I shall always remember him.

This is my second entry in my brother's Guest Book. Tommy, it's been 16 months since your death and almost two full years since I last spent time with you. I miss you so much every day. I still hear your voice and see your face as clearly as if you were here with me. But, I can't just pick up the phone or e-mail you anymore. The only thing I have left of you are my memories and the memories of others that they share. So, for all those who have written in this guest book, please keep doing it. It brings my brother back if only briefly through your stories.

Dear Felts family,
I know they say that time heals but I can’t even imagine the pain you have gone thru, I only knew Tom as a young man and my mother and his aunts and cousins told me how he was doing and where he was. Knowing Tom was one of the people responsible for my safety and freedom was a great feeling for me, having know him growing up I was very proud of the work he was doing for our country and prayed for him and the others serving for us on a daily basis . There is not a day that goes by that I do not pass where Tom is laid to rest and I look over there and think what a sacrifice he made for me and what a sacrifice his family has made and I want the family to know that I thank God everyday for solders like Col.Tom Felts. He is a true HERO. You are in my prayers always and I look forward to the day when I leave this earth and meet Tom again to say thank you for your leadership.

Not a day goes by that I do not remember that night in November when our truck was hit. It has been tough on me everyday since. I look back at the times we spent together at Fort Hood all thru the deployment. I am proud to have been your driver and most of all proud to have served with you. I miss you COL Felts. there is still not one day that goes by that i do not think of you and think of tommy. there is not a time where i see a man or woman in uniform that it does not bring tears to my eyes [just a bit...i know, be strong in public ;o)]... when i taught summer school and substituted at the schools these past months, saying the pledge of allegiance or hearing the star spangled banner at baseball games this summer has changed for me, i actually hear the words, they mean something, they are not longer routine. i've never been so proud! i'm proud of tommy, the more i hear and learn of his service for his country and his soldiers and family, the more of a hero he becomes. i'm proud of you all too! i love you dearly! There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

I dont know if anyone from the felts family is still reading this but i just wanted to say again 7 months later that I am still very sorry about your loss. I went to school with Bekah for 7th and 8th grade. I still rember the day us patton kids found out about his passing. we were all very upset about it. Even though I olny met mr.felts once when me and bekah were partners in Tech lab and even then for a few minutes i saw how much of a great man he was. From my own personal losses i know it doesnt get any easier. keep your head up and rember tom will awalys be a hero. rest in peace mr.felts, rest in peace.

Dear Kim, My wife Julie and I were in your Sunday School Class at Leavenworth Baptist. We really enjoyed the class and Tom was a great teacher while being a great example. I ran into him a couple of times over the years since his CGSC and SAMS days. One of my fondest memories was of a cold Soccer Game that our oldest son was playing in and I came over to your quarters (at Leavenworth) and asked to borrow a jacket for Julie. Of course, Tom lent me a jacket and offered blankets, warm drinks, and any thing else he could think of. I also remember your plaque Joshua 24:15 "But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord". You all showed this everyday. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with you and apologize that we just now found out about Tom's final victory.

My family's most heartfelt condolences on your great loss.
Todd just found out Tom's obituary and forwarded it to me. We knew each other at Fort Hood, where sometimes you watched over my Ashley who was Rebecca's age, after school, until I came back from work. She still treasures the First Communion book mark you gave her on our family's celebration of her completion of this sacrament.
Now I pray for the Lord's grace to be upon you and your family, and that through His Mercy you find solace and comfort, knowing Tom is with our Lord, and is now watching personally over all of you.
I remember how much I loved to see your smiley face and how joyful your home always was. Please take care and know I am always your friend. I will add Tom, and all your family to my private prayers. You can contact me if you wish.

I just got back from Iraq. Tom and I were at a meeting together that fateful night. I had gotten to know him over the past few months and we became fast friends. Our areas overlapped and we had a few joint meetings with sheihks, police, and military all present. Some good stories. I miss him.
