William Gilman Obituary

William Gilman

May 15, 1941 - September 30, 2024

William Byron "Buddy" Gilman, of Gilman Virginia, a husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather was called home to be with the Lord on August 30, 2024 at the age of 83. He was a man among men and one of a kind. The timber industry has lost a well-respected quiet giant. Born May 15, 1941, Buddy lived a life centered around his devotion to his family, hard work, and a love for logging and being outdoors. Buddy is survived by his wife of 62 years, Frances R Ketner "Becky" Gilman. He is survived by their three children Mary Frances Gilman, Becky Ann Gilman Davis (Dwayne), and Howard Gilman (Michelle). Buddy's legacy continues through his 10 grandchildren: Braelyn Phipps (Josh), Gilman Robinson (Emily), Camille Clifton (Dan), Marielle Robinson, Victoria Robinson, I.R. Robinson, Forrest Robinson, Ben Gilman, Ema Gilman, and Luc Gilman. He was also blessed with three great grandchildren, Byron Phipps, Adeline Robinson and Birdie Clifton. He is also survived by siblings W. Pettus Gilman and Emily Clay Evelyn and many nieces and nephews. Buddy was preceded in death by his parents, Wilba P. Gilman and Emily A. Hope Gilman Stanley. After graduating from Henry Clay High School, Buddy served in the United States Navy. Once Buddy returned to Ashland, he started Gilman Logging Company. Buddy enjoyed hunting, fishing, maintaining his garden, walks in the woods looking at timber, and relaxing with his family, enjoying time with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed every aspect of logging, and work was what brought him joy. He was known for his work ethic, drive, and refusal to quit. He was driven like no other. Buddy continued working full time up until his death. The family takes comfort in the fact that Buddy died with his boots on, doing what he loved. It is what he would have wanted.

Buddy's family will have private burial. There will be a celebration of life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Peter's United Methodist Church, Montpelier VA. He will be cherished by his family and the many lives he touched. May he rest in peace.
