William Edward Martin

MARTIN, William Edward, age 83, died on Wednesday, January 26, 2022 at his home in Henrico County. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Oscar Martin and Goldie Grace Prosser Martin; his brother, Bobby Martin; and his first wife, Patricia Ramey Martin. He is survived by his wife, Pattie Jernigan Tobler; his two stepdaughters, Mary and husband, Max Minzner and Anna and husband, Robert Ware; and four beloved grandchildren, Mary Lawrence, Twyla, Jack and Gigi. Billy graduated from Highland Springs High School in 1957, where he was voted by his classmates (to whom he was "Marbles") as the Most Popular Boy in the Senior Class. An outstanding athlete, Billy attended The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, on a football scholarship and later earned an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice from John Tyler Community College. He began his career in law enforcement as a Henrico County Policeman and retired in 2003 from his position as Assistant Inspector General for the Virginia Department of Corrections. Billy was an active member of historic Saint John's Episcopal Church, where he served as a Vestryman, Church Treasurer and Endowment Fund Trustee. As a member of the Buildings and Grounds Committee, Billy devoted countless hours to the maintenance and preservation of the historic property. Memorial donations in Billy's memory may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, a cause close to Billy's heart. Burial will be a private family service.
