William Slate Obituary

SLATE William Clinton Slate Sr., 89, passed away on September 16, 2006 in Emporia, Va. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie Powell Slate; and sister, Edith Slate Ferguson. He was the son of the late Adolphus Fletcher Slate and Effie Rose Vincent Slate. He is survived by his son, William C. Slate Jr. and wife, Barbara Ann of Emporia; three daughters, Barbara Slate Nobles and husband, Don of Colonial Heights, Betty Jean Slate of Richmond and Patsy Slate Avent and husband, Arthur of Chesterfield; 13 grandchildren, W. Clinton "Clint" Slate III, Angie Sadler, Chris Slate of Emporia, Charles P. Muncy IV of Christiansburg, Va., Annette Sherrill, Elizabeth Smyers, Lee Jones, Steve Jones of Richmond, Todd Jones of Fort Collins, Colo., Stacy Young, Christy Powell, Kim Wyngaard and Patty Wyngaard of Chesterfield; 31 great-grandchildren, two devoted sister-in-laws, Jean Bly of Jenison, Mich. and Adelaide Galler of Hampton, Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Slate founded Slate and Spivey General Contractors in August, 1944. He was co-owner of Slate and Slate, Slate Land Development and Falling Run Apartments. Mr. Slate had been an active member of First Presbyterian Church since May, 1950, where he served in the capacity of superintendant and treasurer for Sunday school, Board of Deacons, Elder, and Board of Trustees, and in 1998 was elected Elder Emeritus. Mr. Slate served on the Emporia Cemetery Board Inc. for 32 years and served in the capacity as trustee and treasurer. The family will receive friends at the home of the late William C. Slate on Sunday from 2 to 8 p.m. The funeral will be held at First Presbyterian Church, S. Main Street, Emporia, Va. at 2 p.m., Monday, September 18 with burial in the Emporia Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to First Presbyterian Church, 210 S. Main Street, Emporia, Va. 23847 or Greensville Memorial Rescue Squad or the Emporia Volunteer Fire Department, Emporia, Va.
