William Slate Obituary

William Clinton Slate, Jr.

September 21, 1943 - May 31, 2025

William Clinton Slate, Jr. (Billy) departed this job site on Saturday, May 31, 2025. Not sure yet of the next location.

Billy was born on September 21, 1943 to William Clinton Slate, Sr. and Elsie Powell Slate. He is survived by the love of his life for sixty-one years and married fifty-six years, Barbara Ann Harris Slate; children, William C. Slate III (Jill), Angela Slate Sadler (Hermie) and Edward Christopher Slate (Natalie); nine grandchildren, Corey Alexander Slate (Lexi), Millicent Slate Paul (Austin), William C. Slate IV (Frankie), Cora Sadler Phelps (Cameron), Halie Dru Sadler, Naomi Rose Sadler (Kory), Samantha Noranne Slate (Winston), Caroline Madison Slate (Landon) and Cameron Christopher Slate; one great-grandchild, River Bell Phelps; three sisters, Barbara Taylor (Earl), Betty Jean Slate and Patsy Avent (Arthur); beloved pets, Sparky and Taco; and numerous loving nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends.

Billy, a native of Emporia, VA, spent his entire life as a local builder and contractor as well as owner and operator at Slate & Spivey, Inc. and Slate Land Holdings. With his two sons, who have always worked alongside him, he was most proud to see the fourth generation, Corey, William and Cameron continue the legacy. He was a life-long member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Sunday School Superintendent, Deacon, and Elder of Trustee. He was a member of the Emporia Volunteer Fire Department, Emporia-Greensville Industrial Development Corporation and Chairman of the Emporia Planning and Zoning Committee.

Billy is well known amongst his friends and family for his sense of humor and love of Christ, Henry McKenna, and Lake Gaston, which he enjoyed with his family for more than sixty years. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to First Presbyterian Church of Emporia, VA and the Greensville Volunteer Fire Department, Emporia, VA.
