Winifred Lawson Obituary

LAWSON, Winifred Chamberlain, of Red Oak, Va., died Thursday, December 13, 2007 at Holly Manor in Farmville. The daughter of Alfred Edward and Sarah Louisa Perry Chamberlain, Winifred was born in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England on November 8, 1909. Mrs. Lawson was a nurse for many years in Morristown, N.J., after having trained at Grace New Haven Hospital in Connecticut. She was an antiques dealer in Sussex County, N.J. and later in Foley, Ala., where she was also the co-owner and operator of a bookstore. As a church organist, she served many different parishes. Winifred was married for 63 years to the late Reverend Clement Corbin Lawson and worked with him in his hospital and nursing home ministries. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 19, 2007 at St. John's Episcopal Church in Chase City, with the Rev. Susan A. Grimm officiating. Interment will be in Oakhurst Cemetery in Clarksville. Surviving Mrs. Lawson are daughters, Anne Hershey of Red Oak and Mary Sitomer of Middleton, Mass.; and son, John C. Lawson of Branchville, N.J. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends at their residence, 3016 Jeb Stuart Highway, in Red Oak, Va. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church. Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
