Donald R. "Donnie" Shaffer, age 67, of Leesburg, died Sunday afternoon, Dec. 29, 2013 at the Highland District Hospital.
He was born Feb.18, 1946 in Lynchburg, the son of the late Donald E. and Rebecca Irene (Davis) Shaffer.
He was a veteran of the United States Army. He was a baseball umpire for thirty years, was instrumental in the formation of the Leesburg Little League Basketball league, and was a former long-time volunteer fireman and member of the former Leesburg Jaycees. He was a member of the Leesburg Lions Club for many years, and was a life member of the Leesburg American Legion Post 568 where he was involved in collecting for Christmas Baskets for the less fortunate each year for many years. He was a big Dale Earnhardt and John Wayne fan, and loved being with his family. He also leaves many friends from the regular friday night poker games he thoroughly enjoyed.
He is survived by three children, Angela Penwell and her husband Tim of South Salem, Scott Shaffer of Leesburg and Michael (Tricia) Cagg of Gallatin, Tenn.; his life-friend, Susan Jane Stewart of New Vienna; his best friend, Lester Shoemaker of Leesburg; eight grandchildren, Timothy "T.G." Penwell and Bryce Penwell, both of South Salem, Grace Ellen Shaffer of Leesburg, Gage Evan Shaffer of Springfield, Tenn., Heather (Jesse) Bouillion, Ronald "Bub" (Cortnie) Stotridge and Ryan Stotridge, all of Chillicothe, and Hannah Cagg of Gallatin, Tenn., and a great-grandchild, Izabella Bouillion of Chillicothe.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Carolyn Shaffer Preston.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 3, 2014 at the Turner Funeral Home in Leesburg. Pastor John Fitzgerald will officiate. Burial with military honors presented by the Highland County Honor Guard will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014 at the funeral home in Leesburg.
