Dorothy L. Smith, 85, of Leesburg, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2016 at her residence.
She was born April 4, 1931 in Highland County, the daughter of the late Clifford and Mildred (Rhoneus) Lieurance.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Maynard Smith, on March 1, 1989; one daughter, Janice VanPelt, on Dec. 4, 2011; and one brother, Bill Lieurance.
Dorothy was a graduate of Leesburg High School, and a member of the Leesburg United Methodist Church and the Art Guild. Dorothy, along with her husband Maynard, daughter Janice, and now granddaughter Susan Hurless, owned and operated the family farm and Maynard Smith Insurance Agency. Dorothy was an accomplished artist. Her many works of art are cherished by family and friends.
She is survived by a son-in-law, Robert R. (Ebbie) VanPelt of Leesburg; two granddaughters, Susan (Chris) Hurless and Emily (Jason Sr.) Rice, both of Leesburg; five great-grandchildren, Jason Jr., Shelby and Caleb Rice, and Spencer and Blake Hurless; two brothers, Mark (Novella) Lieurance of Sunbury and Max (Mary Jane) Lieurance of Chillicothe; sister-in-law, Juanita Lieurance of Sabina; caregiver, Nikki Fortner of New Vienna; her special dog, Abby; several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
A celebration of Dorothy's life will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, 2016 at the Leesburg United Methodist Church, 117 Church St., Leesburg, where friends may call Saturday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Pastor Rich Allen will officiate services.
The Thompson Funeral Home in Hillsboro is in charge of arrangements.
