Lowell VanDen Berg Obituary

Lowell Anthony Van Den Berg, 90, a beloved member of the Pricetown community, passed away after a brief illness on Sunday, Feb. 23 at the Otterbein SeniorLife facility in Batavia, Ohio.

Lowell was born on Nov. 11, 1934, in Saint Lawrence South Dakota, the son of the late Herman and Lena (Ligtenberg) Van Den Berg.

Lowell's life epitomized a life of service. After serving the United States in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, he earned his master's degree in civil engineering from Michigan University. He then began a 28-year career with the U.S. Public Health Service and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, where he focused on improving the quality of drinking water.

Upon his retirement in 1989, he began his second career helping countless people achieve their goal of a diploma through Southern State Community College's G.E.D. program for 29 years. Lowell also spent 40 years as a mentor for people seeking addiction recovery, including as a long-time board member of Family Recovery Services in Hillsboro.

In his free time, Lowell enjoyed spending time with his family, telling stories about his childhood in South Dakota, working on his farm, camping, and traveling with his wife and lifelong group of friends.

Lowell is survived by his wife of 68 years, Nona (Wiles) Van Den Berg, of Pricetown, his daughter, Karla Epperson, of Williamsburg, Ohio, and his sons, Scott (Stephanie) Van Den Berg, of Baltimore, Ohio, and Mark (Dena) Van Den Berg, of Hillsboro, Ohio. He is also survived by his sister, Gwen Campbell, of Springboro, Ohio, eight grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.

Lowell was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Max Van Den Berg, of Boise, Idaho, his daughter, Jill (Van Den Berg) Baker, and his great-grandson, Graham Van Den Berg.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Feb. 28, 2025, from noon until the time of the funeral service at 2 p.m. at Pricetown Church of Christ. Daryl Mount will officiate. Burial will follow at Ruble Cemetery.
