Joseph Koehler Obituary

Dr. Joseph Vincent Koehler, Sr., 88, a longtime resident of Norristown and Plymouth Meeting, PA, passed away peacefully on December 17, 2022, at Blue Bell Place in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania, of natural causes. Joe was born to Norbert and Anna (Monsanto) Koehler on April 5, 1934, in the Germantown section of Philadelphia. He attended Immaculate Conception Elementary School and graduated from Northeast Catholic High School for Boys in 1952. He received his BA in biology from LaSalle College in 1956. He received his medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1960. Dr. Koehler completed his internal medicine training at the Riverview Osteopathic Hospital in Norristown, Pennsylvania, and practiced internal medicine and gastroenterology in Norristown at Suburban General Hospital, then Mercy Suburban Hospital until his retirement in the early 2000's, a nearly 50-year career of care to residents of the greater Norristown community. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, wife of 51 years Maryanne, beloved mother-in-law Mary "Mother" Pizzico, and grandson Joseph V. Koehler, III. Joe is survived by his sister, Genevieve Sweet; his 4 children, Joseph Jr. and his wife Terresa, Daniel and his wife Eileen and their 3 children, Thomas, Henry, and Owen, Rebecca Grenke and her husband Kenneth, Richard and his wife Lynn and their son Linus; and a number of beloved relatives and friends. The family wishes to extend their thanks to the nursing and ancillary staff at Blue Bell Place, who cared for "Doc Joe" during his 6 years there as resident. At BBP, Doc rediscovered his love of Frank Sinatra, and regaled anyone who would listen to him singing the Sinatra songbook. The family is especially grateful for Blue Bell Place's care during his last several months of failing health, and grateful to, Gentiva Foundation, the hospice group, who attended to Joe during his last several weeks of life. The family will receive relatives and friends from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Friday December 30, 2022, at Epiphany of Our Lord Catholic Church, 3040 Walton Road, Plymouth Meeting, PA 19462, with Funeral Mass to follow at 11:00 AM. During the viewing, masks are encouraged. A private burial will follow the Funeral Mass at St. Patrick's Cemetery, 2400 DeKalb Pike, East Norriton, PA 19401. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent in Joe's name to the Gentiva Foundation, 3350 Riverwood Parkway SE, suite 1400, Atlanta, GA, 30331.
