Kathryn Buek Obituary

Kathryn “Katie” E. (Curran) Buek, age 37 of Norristown and formerly Plymouth Meeting, died on Wednesday, June 28th, 2016, surrounded by her family, at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, after a courageous and inspiring battle with lung cancer. Katie was born in Abington on February 21, 1979 daughter of Gerald W. and Marybeth (Mountain) Curran. She was the beloved wife of Christopher R. Buek for 11 years. Katie was raised in Plymouth Meeting attending Norwood Academy Preschool and Epiphany of Our Lord Grade School. She was a 1996 graduate of Gwynedd Mercy High School. Katie graduated from Penn State University in 2000 with an undergraduate degree in Psychology. She attended graduate school at St. Joseph University earning her Masters Degree in Healthcare Administration in 2006. She was employed by Central Montgomery County MHMR, HUP Health System, Pennsylvania Hospital and most recently Nazareth Hospital. Katie was diagnosed with stage 4 inoperable lung cancer 7 years ago. Katie, her family and the HUP Healthcare team lead by Dr. Tracy Evans fought tirelessly, essentially beating the odds of a 5 year prognosis by 2 years and three months. Through the course of her difficult battle, Katie adopted Wonder Woman as her totem of strength, courage, beauty, and resolve, and to all who knew her, she will forever be synonymous with the Amazon warrior princess. Katie loved all things to do with her family, and sharing every possible moment with her husband. She had an enduring love for musical theater, terrible TV shows, and, most of all, books. She is survived by: 2 brothers, Sean (Paige) of Doylestown, and David (Paula) of Norristown; 3 sisters, Rebecca (Vincent) Minei of Philadelphia, Patti (Jamal) Griffin of Norristown, and Mo (Mike) Adgie of Ambler; 11 nieces, Gianna, Adrianna, Zoe, Hannah, Alabama, Katie, Rayna, Mary, Wren, Kaiya, and Emmy; 2 nephews, John and Archer. Katie was predeceased by her brother, Tim. Relatives and friends may pay respects on Wednesday evening, July 6th, from 6-8pm at the William A. Moore Funeral Home, 708 Fayette St., Conshohocken. Interment is private. In lieu of flowers, donations in Katie’s memory may be made to the Abramson Cancer Center at their website; www.pennmedicine.org/cancer/giving.

Forever remembering your warm yet fierce spirit, Katie. I imagine you managing the operations of heaven :)
I've attached a picture I was inspired to pastel the night I learned of your original diagnosis. It depicts two struggling, faded trees in the background superseded by vibrant, life-giving trees in the foreground. This is my experience of Katie.

Katie was such a lovely soul. In the relatively short time that we worked together at Penn I could always count on her to be an oasis of warmth, friendliness, and good cheer. It is therefore no surprise to me to learn that she was so widely and deeply beloved.

Our sincere condolences to the entire family of Katie. I knew her when she was a little blond package of energy visiting the Special Religious Ed Program at St. Paul's.
We've known the Curran family for many years. Your loss is profound. We do not know Katie's husband; but you are in our hearts and prayers as well.
Please know how our hearts ache for all of you.
Katie, rest in peace and thanks for the pleasure of knowing a bit of you here on earth.

Although I only worked with Katie for a brief time at Nazareth Hospital, I found her to be a genuinely warm and funny personality. She offered so much of herself in spite of her illness. So many of us will miss the opportunity to get to know her more and support her mission to offer the best of ourselves every day. Thoughts and prayers to her family during this difficult time. Rest in Peace Katie.

Katie & I began our careers at Penn Psychiatry within months of each other. I have never met such fierce determination wrapped in such a delicate, lovely package. I was privileged to work alongside of Katie & to know her as a genuine, hope-filled woman. Your brave spirit remains forever, Katie. My heartfelt condolences to her family.

I am so sad to hear of Katie's passing. During the time (years ago) when we worked in the same department, I found her to be such a lovely person, and it was so easy to team up with her when something important needed attention. I am so sorry that I lost touch with her when she changed work settings. I will always remember Katie. I want to offer her family my deepest condolences.
