Adelaida Mateo Obituary

Dec. 17, 1939 Dec. 21, 2016

Adelaida "Dely" Jose Mateo passed away peacefully in her home in Vallejo,CA. She had just celebrated her 77th birthday, surrounded by family and friends. Her sense of humor, kindness, generosity, and beautiful smile will truly be missed.

She is survived by her husband, Alfonso; son, Alden; daughter, Meg; grandchildren, Lauryn and Miles Ilasco; sister, Josefina Mateo; and brother, Eduardo Jose.

Dely was born on Dec. 17, 1939, in San Juan, Manila, Philippines, to Eduardo Lim Jose, Sr. and Gregoria Dilag Jose. She was the middle child of five, with siblings Leopoldo, Alejandria, Josefina, and Eduardo. In 1945, her family moved to Olongapo City, outside of Subic Bay Naval Base.

Dely began working at Subic Bay as a cashier when she was 17. After she completed her associate's degree in accounting at Columban College, she worked in the accounting department for the Subic Bay Officers' Club. In all, she worked for the US government, primarily as an accountant, for over 35 years.

In 1970, she married Alfonso Mateo, who was enlisted in the US Navy. She moved with him to Mare Island Naval Base. In the next five years, she gave birth to son, Alden, followed by daughter, Meg. As a family, they moved to different naval bases where Alfonso was stationed - Bremerton, San Diego, Clark Air Base, and Treasure Island. After Alfonso's retirement from the navy, they settled in Vallejo.

Dely retired in 2006 and engaged in activities she loved including singing in the choir, serving at St. Catherine's Church, and participating in Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary and Ina Poon Bato rosary groups. But, her greatest joy in retirement was caring for her two grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 4 and Thursday, Jan. 5 from 12 to 9 p.m., with a Rosary on Thursday at 7 p.m., at Skyview Memorial Chapel, 200 Rollingwood Drive. The funeral service will be held on Friday, Jan. 6, at 11 a.m., at St. Catherine's Church, 3450 Tennessee St. The interment will take place at All Souls Cemetery following the service.
