I knew Burt when I lived in Davis and worked in the camera store where he would often come to buy film, or just talk photography. He worked at Davis Lumber and Hardware in those days, was very knowledgeable about DIY, and liked bantering with customers. He used to come by in his little MGB convertible to visit me and my wife (in our 40-foot trailer!) on Olive Drive. I remember the time he came over and asked if I'd go with him on a little ride in his car (which he loved, he called it "the B"). Turned out to be a wild and windy 200-mile tour of the Bay Area. Burt was energetic, friendly, and outspoken. I remember we used to talk about our "obnoxious" customers--obnoxious being one of his favorite words. Though he was impatient with such types, I never knew him to be anything but friendly, upbeat, and kind. I lost touch with him sometime in the 1970s or '80s and never saw him again, though he's an indelible presence in my memory. Just today I searched his name and sadly found his obituary. Rest in peace Burt, I liked you a lot.

Dear Katie,
We were so sorry to learn of Burt's passing. We so enjoyed having him come into the shop. Always happy and most of the time coming in from his morning swim. Always loved his homemade sweatshirts too! He will be missed. I just learned the other day that you had moved to Vallejo. I was hoping for Burt to have a long enjoyable retirement. I know Burt is still continuing to make sawdust.... God speed my friend.

I, too, read obituaries of strangers ... and this was one I think "Burt" would be proud of - very colorful. Thank you for sharing his most interesting life. My condolences. D.
