Jon Mannel Obituary

Nov. 6, 1956 - June 20, 2017

Jon Owen Mannel, "Papa", 60, of Vacaville passed away due to perforated esophagus complications.

He was born in Vallejo and graduated in 1974 from Hogan Senior High School.

Jon had a wonderful childhood growing up in the Pennycook Elementary neighborhood where he played East Vallejo Little League baseball during his younger days. He still remains friends with many from the neighborhood.

At 12 years old, he was very business-like having a newspaper route and continuing to work at Nujo's Pizzeria and Thorson's Warehouse, (with Nana), saving his money which eventually led to help him buy his first home at 18 years old. He was very proud to own his 754 Lockwood Drive home in Vallejo.

In September 1975, he entered the Electrician Apprenticeship and worked at Mare Island (until closing 1998) and there he continued his federal service at National Park Service, Presidio Trust and US Bureau of Reclamation finally retiring in January 2012 with 39 years of federal service.

Stefanie and Jon met through a mutual friend, (Cindi Bright), at Mare Island. They dated for 11 years and then married Sept. 9, 2000. In their hearts they felt they have shared 25 years together.

In March 2013 Jon was tired of watching "Burn Notice" sequels and began working at Balfour Beatty overseeing the housing for Travis Air Force Base. He had passion and work ethics to do things the right way and what was fair. He didn't fall into the "good old boys" group.

His electrical business "Mannel Electric" was a true gift to himself. He enjoyed working and said "When it's not fun anymore then it's time". He was a very talented "jack of all trades" and would help you at a moments' notice. He had a big heart and loved to help others. But if you burned him, he had the memory of an Elephant.

Jon and Stefanie enjoyed being Oakland Warriors fans, camping, Harley rides, annual Puerto Vallarta trips and recent addiction were Royal Caribbean cruises. Their favorite places were the Southern Caribbean and Puerto Vallarta.

Jon is survived by his wife, Stefanie; his mother Joye who he loved unconditionally; Fur Baby Mullie; son, Christopher (grandson Lucas) and daughter, Bree.

He also leaves behind brothers, Billy (Patty) and Donnie (Doralyn); nephews, Andrew Brennan, Jeff Rodgers Kevin Mannel, Aaron, Jordan and Joseph Walmsley; brothers-in-law, Mike and Darren Walmsley; nieces, Angie Alameda, Danielle Brennan, Lisa Rodgers, Dawn Mannel, DeAnna Mannel, Imani Mills, Ryann Matson, Adrianne Walmlsey and sister-in-law, Kim Curtola; The Littles, Azrael, Yael, Mason and Baby Walmsley, Cavin and Jaelyn Brennan, Olivia and brother, Rodgers and Addison and Jacob Alameda; special family, Kenny Groen, Max Estrada, Lilly/Dale Dawson, Mark Rose, Rich MacKenzie, Jim Christensen, Shelly Lane; neighbors, Tim Russell, The Old Mare Island Gang, Keith Braga, Abe Ramos, Mara Rigel and the girls, Jimmy/Sandi and Jacqui Wilkes and his Balfour Beatty Family, (workwife/Julie Brosseau).

Jon is preceded in death by his father, Donald; grandparents, Dorothy and Virgil, and Nana and William; mother-in-law, Frances and father in law, Skip.

His wife wishes to thank Vacaville and Vallejo Kaiser medical staff to include ICU nurses Dawn, Sumaya and Alex and Dr. Patrick Gibbons.

Jon was a donor and we were blessed to be given the opportunity to donate his corneas to two special people. His wishes were to be cremated and to celebrate rather than being in a state of sadness. His Celebration of Life will be Sept. 23, at his home. Cremation arrangements are being handled by McCune Garden Chapel Memorial, Vacaville.

So very saddened to hear this news. I met Jon in the 70s during our Mare Island electrician apprenticeship, and what a great time we had as friends.....Playing Vallejo City League basketball, where Jon led the league both in rebounds and opponents suffering serious bodily harm...Red's Pizza for celebratory brews.....and Giants' home openers, somehow coinciding with a sick leave day.....
To his wife and family, please accept my heartfelt condolences....Jon was a wonderful guy.
(And please allow me to acknowledge his brothers, Donnie and Billy....friends also of mine.....who Jon held in such high regard....God Bless.)

Stephanie , its was a real shock to hear of Jon passing . He was truly a good , good man . Having worked around him at the shipyard he had a great reputation as a fair supervisor and was respected for that as well as just being a cool person . To all the Mannel family and their friends I extend all my sympathy .

Jon was a great guy to know. I remember the city league BB teams we played on. Jon was our enforcer, so he didn't mess around when it was crunch time.
