Stan Abernathy, 71, of Concord died peacefully Sept. 16, 2009.
Stan was born July 10, 1938, in Vallejo to Earl and Sophie Abernathy. A 1957 graduate of Vallejo Senior High School, Stan was drafted into the Army during the Cuban crisis and received an Honorable Discharge.
Stan and Pat moved to Concord in 1967. They developed a passion for traveling and boating, including day trips to the Delta waterskiing, and cruises to Mexico, the Caribbean, the East Coast, the Panama Canal, Hawaii and Alaska.
Stan retired after 35 years with Foster & Kleiser and was a proud member of the Teamsters Union. In retirement, Stan discovered golf and enjoyed meeting with his good buddies at the Buchanan Golf Club. Stan always looked forward to his next RV trip, and traveled often across the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Alaska with great friends from the Concord Caravaners RV Group, Alpine Coach Association and Alpine Coach NorCal. When not on the road, Stan was often found on the sidelines of his grandchildren's school and sporting events. He was also a 25-year member of Walnut Creek Elks Lodge No. 1811.
Stan was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Darrell and Gary.
A beloved husband, father and grandfather, Stan is survived by Pat, his best friend and wife of 45 years; daughters, Leslie Linderman (Chad) and Danielle Bartolomei (Scott); and grandchildren, Jake and Jennifer Linderman and Ryan Bartolomei. He is also survived by his Aunt Rose Johnson, cousins Nancy and Judy, along with Pat's family, Shirley Jantzen, Carol and Vlad Langer, Tim Matson, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, at Ouimet Brothers Chapel in Concord with a reception to follow.
Donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Pat & Family, Annette and I are sadden to hear of Stan's passing. We remember the wonderful times we had in LaPine, and very fond memory of your visit to our home in Salem. -- Stan was a very special person, he was a true american, a role model for his family, and I shall always cherish the time we spent golfing, and our conversations that solved the world's problem's.
We pray that you and your family have found peace and comfort in knowing that Stan is with the Lord and is watching out for all.

Pat & Family, my deepest sympathies to you for your loss. I remember Stan from my high school years -- he had the coolest car, coolest boat, and, although older than I, he was always friendly to me. I was delighted that you, Pat, and he married --- I thought it was a terrific match...and apparently so. You have treasured memories and a wonderful family. My prayers are with all of you.

Going through school with Stan I remember when lining up alpheticly he was always number one in line for everything. I can't remember if it was a good thing or a bad thing. Maybe some of both. I missed seeing him at some of the class of 57 outings but I saw the photos that Chris put on line.
I am sure he will be missed. My prayers are with all of you.
