Alejandro Julian Montes, recently a resident of Kingston, peacefully passed from this Earth on the morning of Oct. 14, 2025, following a brief illness.
Affectionately known as "Uncle Alex" to family and friends, he had the ability to light up a room with his wit and charm. An exceptional raconteur, he could hold the attention of any group with his hilarious, often self-deprecating, storytelling. A master of the Cuban sandwich, his delicious creation was always eagerly awaited and considered a must treat for the holidays. A consummate Disney and Yankees fan, Uncle Alex lived his life to the fullest and brought that infectious joy to those around him.
Alex was born in Havana, Cuba, and emigrated to the United States with his family in 1966 to escape the Castro regime. He settled and lived most of his life in the Washington Heights section of New York City. After attending college, he became a teacher and taught science and computer ed in the New York City school system for over 25 years, primarily at the same elementary school he attended as a youth. Following his retirement and COVID, he moved to Luzerne County to be closer to his remaining family and friends.
Alex was preceded in death by his parents, Silvio and Hortensia.
He is survived by his sister, Maria Montes Siscaretti; brother-in-law, Andrew, and nephew, Andrew Jr., of Palmyra; cousins, Militza Suarez Favetta of Mountain Top, and Gustavo Suarez of New York City; godson, Vincent Favetta of Mountain Top; and "nephew," Matthew Favetta of Kissimmee, Fla.
He leaves behind a cadre of close, loving friends and extended family members. Uncle Alex will truly be missed.
