Bernadine Helen Aciukewicz

Bernadine Helen Aciukewicz, 91, of Harvard, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully in early January at her home after a period of declining health, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, faith, and devotion to others. Those who knew her will remember her kind spirit, her love of costume jewelry and festive attire, and how she brightened the lives of those around her with her caring nature and desire to uplift others.

Born in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania, in 1933, Bernie graduated from Nanticoke High School in 1951. After completing her registered nurse education and certification at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital Nursing School in 1955, she embarked on a career dedicated to caring for patients. In 1958, she married Carl Aciukewicz, beginning a loving partnership that would span 56 years, until his passing.

Throughout her 35-year nursing career, Bernie touched many lives in operating rooms, delivery rooms, and intensive care units across Pennsylvania. The compassion and dedication that made her a respected nurse extended beyond her professional life—she was a loving mother and grandmother, and a devoted wife who single-handedly cared for her husband following a debilitating stroke. Her nurturing qualities made her a beloved presence in each of the neighborhoods and church communities wherever she lived.

A woman of deep faith who believed in guardian angels, Bernadine was a devoted member of Holy Trinity Church (now St. Faustina) in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania. After moving to Harvard, Massachusetts to be closer to her son's family, she became an active parishioner at St. Theresa, the Little Flower Church. Though separated by distance, she often talked about her Pennsylvania friends and family and held them closely in her daily prayers. She dedicated time to daily prayers and always offered to pray for someone in need, whatever the cause. She was a lifelong knitter creating hats, slippers, and afghans for family, friends, and those in need. She loved gardening and flowers. She was often the life of the party at family and social gatherings, known for a sharp whistle and questionable accordion skills.

Bernadine was predeceased by her beloved husband, Carl, and her siblings: sisters Marion (Makara) Felix and Dolores (Makara) Kaminski; and brothers, Leonard Makara and Henry Makara. She is survived by her son, Thomas, and his wife Lisa, of Harvard, Mass.; and her two beloved grandsons, Aidan and James, to whom she was lovingly known as "Babcie." She also leaves behind beloved family members across Pennsylvania's Wyoming Valley and in Delaware, including numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Her playful spirit, kindness, and warmth will be missed by all who knew her. Her radiant smile reminded us all that a little sparkle—whether in jewelry or in spirit—can light up someone's whole day.

Visiting hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m Friday, Jan. 10, at Badger Funeral Home in Littleton, Mass. A funeral at St. Theresa's Church in Harvard will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, followed by a reception at the Council on Aging, 16 Lancaster Country Road, Harvard. Interment will be in Nanticoke, Pa., at a later date.
