Daniel Kanter Obituary

WILKES-BARRE — It is with great sadness that the family of Daniel Kanter announce his peaceful passing at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital with his family by his side. He was six days away from his 95th birthday, and we mourn his passing. Daniel was born in Philadelphia to Helen and Jack Kanter, and later moved to Plains, when his widowed mother married Louis Weiss.

Their blended family included his sister, Rhoda Kanter Friedman, Betty Weiss Balter, and Sheldon Weiss, all of whom predeceased Daniel. Anyone who knew Dan knew that his family meant everything to him. He looked forward to family visits and celebrations and the food that went along with it.

Dan met the love of his life, Loraine Lila Kirshner, at Plains High School, where they began a love affair that spanned more than seven decades. They raised their four children: Marcia (George) Miller; Jack (Patricia) Kanter, both deceased; Barbara (Michael) Peisner; and Alan (Sharon) Kanter. Dan and Lila are doting grandparents of seven grandchildren: Rachel (Michael), Emily (Eric), Sam, Aaron, Jeff (Anais), Gabrielle, and Jack, and two great-grandchildren: Jackson and Parker. He has many nieces and nephews.

After serving in the Army, Daniel worked for American Furniture until he joined his father in Weiss Market grocery store in Plains. He and his wife Lila later opened Kanters' Fruit Basket store in Kingston. Dan took great pride in his creative and artful fruit basket arrangements.

Daniel was a member of Congregation Ohav Zedek, serving for many years on the Board, as Treasurer and Chairman of the Cemetery Committee. He regularly attended services at the Luzerne Orthodox Synagogue, often setting up the kiddushes. He served in various leadership roles at the Men's Club at the Jewish Community Center, and especially enjoyed his role finding speakers for meetings.

He also volunteered with the American Heart Association, was a lifelong member of the Freemasons, and was a diehard Phillies fan. Dan loved to talk to people and made friends with everyone he came in contact with. He was always willing to help anyone with anything, with a smile on his face.

Funeral service will be conducted on Sunday, October 16, 2022, at 1 p.m. at Ohav Zedek Cemetery, 500 Chestnut Street, Hanover Township. Arrangements under the care of the Rosenberg Funeral Chapel, Inc. www.RosenbergFuneralChapel.com.

Shiva will be observed at the Kanter home on Wednesday and Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., and on Friday from 1 to 3 p.m.

Memorial donations may be sent to Ohav Zedek Synagogue, the Men's Club at the Jewish Community Center, the American Heart Association, or the charity of your choice.

To the Kantar Family
Although we only knew Danny for a split second I ALWAYS looked forward to seeing him and listening to his stories while visiting my husband Joe...he put a smile on my face every time I walked in that room. We are so very sorry for your loss.

Lila, So sorry to hear about Danny"s passing. My sister, brother and I have fond memories of running across the street to get our penny candy and five cent popsicles. You were the friendly face up front and Danny was the smiling face in the back behind the deli counter. May your wonderful memories be a comfort to you and your family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dear Lila, What a wonderful man. I loved him like a father. You were both heroes and role models to me. Working at Kanter´s and especially working during the holiday rush with Dan and Kitch and Allen, Patricia and Wayne the delivery man, was so much fun, because of your kind spirits. We worked long hard hours but they are memories of fun times shared with the kindest of people. You and Mr Kanter always made all of your employees feel so loved and appreciated. I strive always to be the boss " The Big Cheese " that Mr Kanter was to all of us. I am so glad I was able to visit with you both last December Mr Kanter was an incredible man whose memory will live on forever in the hearts of everyone he touched. Much love to you and your wonderful family. Karen Cackowski Park

Dearest Lila, I am so sorry to hear of Danny's passing. I will never forget the wonderful breakfasts we had every Saturday at Abe's with him, my father-in-law Julius Brand, Alan Miller, his good friend Georgie and the rest of the boys. It was like having minyon at Abes. Loved seeing you guys on the porch when we take our walks. He was a wonderful man and will be missed. May his memory be a blessing. Love, Linda and Larry Brand
