Edward (Eddie) Birnbaum, formerly of Wilkes-Barre, passed away peacefully on Feb. 1, 2023, surrounded by his beloved family at his home in Weston, Fla. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., to the late Louis and Ida (née Shanker) Birnbaum.
Eddie moved to Wilkes-Barre as a young child and graduated from Meyers High School ('54), and Wilkes College ('58), where he was named to Who's Who Among American College Students, and was co-captain of the basketball team, and a varsity pitcher on the baseball team. The day after graduating, Eddie married his life-long love, the former Patricia (Patsy) Reed, of Kingston. Eddie studied business at University of Southern California, and then returned to Wilkes-Barre to join Faith Shoe Company, a leading independent manufacturer of women's footwear, founded by his father and uncle.
After Hurricane Agnes, Eddie and Patsy moved with their family to South Florida and founded another shoe manufacturer, Dolphin Shoe Company, in Hialeah, Fla., where he worked for decades with Patsy and sons, Jeffrey and Steven. Eddie was a member of Congregation Ohav Zedek in Wilkes-Barre, Temple Solel in Hollywood, Fla., and then Temple Dor Dorim, in Weston, Fla.
In addition to Patsy, his devoted wife of nearly 65 years, Eddie is survived by his six beloved children: Scott (and Lynn Baden) of Newton, Mass.; Jeffrey (and Wendy) of Weston, Fla.; Betsy of Weston, Fla.; Lisa Brandes, of Weston, Fla.; Steven (and Sharon) of Weston, Fla.; and Amy Goldstein, of Parkland, Fla.; fifteen adoring grandchildren: Rachel Hashkes (and Andrew), Jillian Seigel (and Garett), Hannah Birnbaum (and Ben Bernays), Jordan Stuart, Matthew Birnbaum, Adam Birnbaum, Nicole Feldman (and Ari), Harrison Brandes, Jonathan Brandes, Jessica Stuart, Noah Brandes, Dylan Brandes, Sydney Goldstein, Ashley Goldstein, and Sarah Goldstein; and three treasured great-grandchildren: Camilla, Olivia and Jacob Seigel.

I worked at Faith Shoe for several years while attending college. I found the Birnbaum family to be very accommodating for those of us attending school. I met Eddie one time when he was taking a tour of the plant.
