WILKES-BARRE — Frank A. Schall, 93, passed away peacefully on Oct. 15, 2017. He is the son of the late Onuphrie and Maryanna (Gola) Szal, of Wilkes-Barre.
A member of St. Stanislaus Kosta Church/Parish of St. Andre Bessette and lifelong resident of the Brookside section of Wilkes-Barre, he attended St. Stanislaus Kostka Elementary and then James M. Coughlin High School, class of 1942. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Radioman 3rd Class RAS, stationed in Norfolk and Franklin, Va.; North Dakota; and Sampson Lake, N.Y. He always joked by saying, "I was in the Navy, but never on a ship!" After discharge, he worked as a welder 1st class at Sun Shipyard and Drydock in Chester. He later returned to Wilkes-Barre and married Alice H. Lowe of East End. They were both employed by B.F. Goodrich, Exeter, until retirement.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Alice, and sisters, Irene and Florence Schall.
Frank was a great gardener, and an avid musician and accordion player, called upon many times to "just come over and play us a few polkas." He performed and recorded for such notables as The Continentals, Lefty and the Polka Chaps and other Wyoming Valley bands. He enjoyed retirement to the fullest, participating in many family gatherings and traditions, numerous Atlantic City casino trips, traveling, visits to Mohegan Sun, gatherings with St. Cecelia's Cosmopolitan Club of Exeter, and mornings with Dukey's Café Breakfast Gang. Frank was a lifetime member of the American Federation of Musicians.
He is survived by his son, Frank W., daughter-in-law, Karen A., and grandson, Jonathan B. Schall, all of Wyoming.
He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, neighbors and fellow musicians.
The family would like to thank Dr. Patrick J. Kerrigan for his compassionate care; the staff of Highland Manor, Exeter; Wilkes-Barre General Hospital; and Erwine Hospice for their kindness and support. And the various ambulances services that transported him
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 9:30 a.m. from the Metcalfe-Shaver-Kopcza Funeral Home Inc., 504 Wyoming Ave., Wyoming. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. in St. Stanislaus Kostka Church/St. Andre Bessette Parish, 668 N. Main St., Wilkes-Barre. Interment at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Carverton.
