WILKES-BARRE — How does one convey the awesome nature of anything in a paragraph? This is the obituary of Genevieve (Jenny) Butczynski — my awesome mother: Jenny was born on Sept. 10, 1941, and passed away peacefully at her home on Dec. 18, 2017.
To say that she was a warm and loving person borders disrespect, and to say that she could be as tough as a cut nail, when the situation called for such, is an understatement.
While always exhibiting style and class, in the '60s and '70s, she was a garment worker who stepped up to the plate to defend workers' rights as an ILGWU rep. In the '80s and '90s, she worked as a matron and then prison guard at the Luzerne County Prison, where, again, she fought for her fellow co-workers' rights as a union advocate. She was always about the Truth as she knew it. Hard act to follow — period.
She eventually rose through that cesspool to become the first female Lieutenant on record. Gloria Steinem would be proud! Her sense of right and wrong led her to become "The whistle-blower" as she helped expose the disgusting corruption within the Luzerne County prison system, which was prevalent at that time.
Despite having been preceded in death by many of her friends and family, she has left so many of us behind to mourn our loss. I'm not chronicling a list here; if I miss one of you, she'll haunt me.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Jendrzejewski Funeral Home, Wilkes-Barre.
Respecting her wishes, there will be no viewing. In honor of her nature, my Dad (her devoted husband of a kazillion years) and I would appreciate if you forgo flowers and such, and make a donation to one of Jenny's many causes:
The homeless.
The Salvation Army and all of its amazing works.
The SPCA.
Saint Jude's Children's Hospital.
Awesome lady. Period.
