Harold Galey Obituary

Harold Galey, 76, of Wilkes-Barre, passed away Saturday morning, April 10, 2010 at Hospice Community Care Inpatient Unit at Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre. Born in Forty Fort on May 19, 1933, he was a son of the late Harry and Margaret Williams Galey and had attended James Coughlin High School. In 1950, Harold served as the original Mr. Peanut and went on to become an assistant manager with the Planters Peanut Company. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, reaching the rank of sergeant first class. Following his military service, Harold spent the next 54 years self-employed as a barber having had shops on Ross Street and later Carey Avenue. He was a former member of the Messiah Lutheran Church, where he served on the council. He was also a member of the Barbers International Union. He was preceded in death by his brothers William, Donald and Thomas. Surviving is his wife of 47 years, the former Charlotte Phillips; sons, John and his wife, Debbie, Wilkes-Barre, and Harold Jr. and his wife, Theresa, Moscow; grandchildren, Nickolas and Jessica. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. from the Bednarski & Thomas Funeral Home, 27 Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre, with the Rev. Douglas Posegate, officiating. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Leukemia Foundation.
