NANTICOKE — John W. Kunick Jr., 86, of Nanticoke, passed away Thursday, June 14, 2018, at Lankenau Hospital, Wynnewood, where he was a patient for two weeks. He had been seriously ill for the past month.
Born Aug. 7, 1931, in Nanticoke, he was the son of the late John W. and Mary (O'Block) Kunick Sr. He graduated from Nanticoke High School, Class of 1949. A veteran of the Korean War, John enlisted and proudly served his country with the U.S. Army Security Agency, 330th Command Recon Company in Korea. He was awarded the National Defense Service, United Nations Service and Korean Service Medals and Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged Sept. 2, 1955, attaining the rank of sergeant.
Prior to retiring in 1995, he was employed by the federal government with the Defense Contract Maintenance Agency for 25 years.
He was a member of St. Robert Bellarmine Parish, St. Aloysius Church, the Korean War Veterans Association, Kingston, and Disabled American Veterans.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 31 years, the former Patricia Washko, on Jan. 12, 1995; a son, John W. Kunick III, and daughter Kimberly Lynn Kunick, both in infancy; and sisters Pearl Toth, Irene Wettenborg and Mary Farmer.
He will be missed by his daughter, Sharon Pericci and husband John, of Hanover Green section of Hanover Township; a grandson, Kurt Pericci, of Philadelphia; a granddaughter, Kim Pericci, of Hanover Green; sisters Margaret Lewis, of San Jose, Calif., and Loretta Vermillion, of Camp Springs, Md.; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will begin at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday from Davis-Dinelli Funeral Home, 170 E. Broad St,, Nanticoke, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Robert Bellarmine Parish/St. Aloysius Church, 143 Division St., Wilkes-Barre, with the Rev. Richard J. Cirba as celebrant.
Interment with military honors will follow in Hanover Green Cemetery, Hanover Township.
Viewing and calling hours will be 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
