PITTSTON — John F. Turon, 94, a World War II Army veteran, of Pittston, passed away Sunday, Aug. 5, 2018, at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township.
Born in Plainsville, on May 22, 1924, John was the son of the late John and Julia Soska Turon.
John attended St. John's Slovak School and graduated from Pittston Area High School, Class of 1943.
He was employed as a truck driver for Mitchel's Lumber Yard in Pittston.
John was a World War II veteran, serving in the United States Army. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in July 1943, completed combat training and was then shipped overseas.
After serving 18 months in India and then Burma, he was a casualty and was sent back to the U.S. Army General Hospital in Phoenixville. He was discharged from the VA Hospital in Perry Point, Md.
John was awarded several medals, including the Asiatic Campaign Medal, WWII Bronze Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the WWII Victory Medal.
He was a life member of the Fort Pittston Post 635 VFW before transferring to the Kingston Post 283.
He was also a member of the China-Burma India (CBI) Veterans Association and life member of the DAV.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his sister, Eleanor Tomaskovic; brothers Andrew, Thomas, Joseph and Edward; and numerous nieces and nephews.
John is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday from Bednarski Funeral Home, 168 Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. John the Evangelist Church, 35 William St., Pittston.
Interment will follow in St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Schooley Street, Exeter, where military honors will be accorded by the United States Army.
Family and friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m Thursday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Pittston Memorial Library Fund, 47 Broad St., Pittston.
