Jorge Garcia-Pons Obituary

March 17, 2005
Jorge Garcia-Pons, 70, a resident of Moscow died Thursday in the VNA Hospice Unit at Community Medical Center, Scranton. He and wife, the former Maureen Klaproth, would have celebrated their 32nd wedding anniversary on May 26, 2005.
He was born on January 25, 1935, in Havana, Cuba, son of the late Dr. Cesar and Margot Garcia-Pons, and was graduated from La Salle High School in Havana. He attended Villanova University, Cuba, and Purdue University, Lafayette, Indiana.
He began employment with Techneglas, formerly Owens-Illinois, at the Havana plant, and he left Cuba in 1960 after Castro's government took over that facility. He continued employment with the company in Muncie, Indiana. He moved to this area when the new plant was built in Pittston in 1969, living first in Mountain Top and then in Scranton and Moscow. He served as quality control supervisor, industrial engineering supervisor, and purchasing manager at various times until his retirement in 1997. He had been active in corporate fundraising for Junior Achievement of Northeastern Pennsylvania, and received special honors for his fundraising efforts in 1981 and 1982.
Before his illness, he enjoyed playing golf, hunting and fishing, and was an enthusiastic traveler, taking trips to Mexico, England, France and Spain following his retirement. He enjoyed attending Broadway Theatre of Northeastern Pennsylvania and Northeast Philharmonic concerts.
He loved his wife and children very much, and in the recent past, was very grateful for the kindnesses of his VNA Hospice caregivers, particularly Andrea Yerke, R.N., Marlene Grattolino, and Barbara Kotulis.
Surviving are four children, a daughter, Dr. Teresa Garcia-Pons Hernandez and her husband Robert of Ormond Beach, FL; two sons, Cesar, an architect of Miami Beach, FL; a son, Gabriel, a sales manager for Pernod, Miami, FL; and a daughter, Rebecca, a student at Pennsylvania State University, University Park; two grandsons, Christopher and Joseph Hernandez, Ormond Beach, FL.; aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated by Msgr. John Sempa on Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Moscow, with interment at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call today from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Frank T. Mazur Funeral Home, Inc., 519 Dundaff St., Dickson City. People attending the funeral Mass on Monday are asked to go directly to the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to VNA Hospice of Northeastern Pennsylvania, 301 Delaware Ave., Olyphant, PA, 18447.
