Martha S. Mitchell, 66, of 29 Palms, Calif., died peacefully at home on Dec. 14, 2022, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born Feb. 12, 1956, in Wilkes-Barre, she was the youngest daughter of the late Attorney S. Keene and Mary (Molly Brewster) Mitchell.
She was a graduate of Wyoming Seminary College Preparatory School, where she excelled in foreign languages and was a valued member of the field hockey team. She attended Katherine Gibbs College, Boston, and worked several years in the administrative support staff for the American Embassy in Brazil, Haiti, and Japan. It was during this time she met the love of her life Mike Neveu, who she absolutely adored through their 37 years of marriage.
Martha worked several years at Torbik Safe and Lock, Wilkes-Barre, until 2005 when she moved with her husband to 29 Palms, Calif., where she volunteered at the Morongo Basin senior support center, now known as the Center of Healthy Generations. More recently she volunteered at the Joshua Tree No-Kill Animal Shelter. Martha is retired from Hi Pro Inc. in 29 Palms.
Martha was talented in so many ways, and her friends and family know so well how fond she was of dogs. She and Mike raised more than a dozen dogs throughput their marriage, including Chap, her brother Brew's dog, and their mastiff Max.
Martha was a fan of classic movies and novels. Her favorite holiday was Halloween. She was a skilled seamstress and a whiz at math. To this day her girlfriends will say "we need Martha" when calculating the tip, and splitting the meal tab. In addition to her parents, Martha was preceded in death by her brother, William Brewster Mitchell; and brother-in-law, Bucky Baberick. She is survived by her loving husband Mike Neveu; brother, Samuel; and sister, Polly Mitchell; niece, Colby Baberick; and other family members including a nephew, nieces, cousins, and a close knit group of Sem girlfriends. Memorial donations would be appreciated to the Joshua Tree No-Kill Shelter, P.O. Box 1234, Joshua Tree, CA 92252.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Martha´s passing. I worked at the Morongo Basin Humane Society for seven years and was lucky enough to get to know Martha during my time at the shelter. She was a dedicated volunteer and a wonderful friend. Kind, smart, and compassionate. She will be missed by so many.
