Michael Loughlin Obituary

Michael Patrick Loughlin, age 42, passed away from a seizure-related accident on Friday, Aug. 19, 2022. Born 3-18-80 to William and Mary Mooney Loughlin, he was a lifelong resident of Plymouth. A beautiful life became an angel.

Mike attended Holy Child School and graduated from Bishop O'Reilly in 1998, where he played football, basketball, and baseball. He took pride in bragging about being the homecoming king, which caused many eye rolls.

He attended Penn State University, studying civil engineering until he was stricken ill with viral encephalitis and meningitis in 2000. This disease left him with epilepsy. After a few years of therapy, he continued his education at LCCC and graduated from Bloomsburg University with an elementary education degree.

Michael was a lifelong member of St. Vincent's Church/All Saints Church in Plymouth. While in school he was an altar server. He was a Boy Scout and volunteered in the food drives for the cwa 13000 union for many years. He has been employed at Children's Service Center for the past 13 years, working as a therapeutic staff support in various schools.

Mike was a beautiful person with the kindest and biggest heart, silliest personality, and most infectious joy. He was always happy and really lived life to the fullest. He was the best husband, son, cousin, uncle, nephew, grandson, godson, friend and worker that anyone could ask for. He was a fighter, aka Rocky and Maximus Mike, and he did all he could do in the fight against epilepsy and other hardships. He handled adversity with resiliency and pure grace.

He volunteered for the Epilepsy Foundation Eastern Pennsylvania and was a member of the northeast support group. This northeast support group became his extended family and he loved each member. This group will continue to honor Mike by raising epilepsy awareness and helping others live their most fulfilled lives. Mike had just finished volunteering as a camp counselor at camp achieve for children diagnosed with epilepsy. This was his 15th summer as a counselor and he cherished camp as the place where he met the love of his life, Rena. Every year they returned to be with their camp family and always had the most magical time at camp celebrating the lives of children and adults diagnosed with epilepsy. Mike understood the epilepsy journey was not for the faint of heart and he would always say "when life knocks you down, you can choose to get back up!" And that's exactly what he did. He touched so many lives and encouraged so many people to live their best lives with this disease.

He enjoyed spending time with his large family, beach vacations with his wife, fireworks and the 4th of July, Saint Patrick's Day, Notre Dame and Broncos football games, eating chicken fingers and fries, watching his favorite movies on repeat, playing pool, playing with their dog, Maximus, and get-togethers with best friends. Mike and Rena's wedding was the best wedding ever. Mike was also a local celebrity as the winner of the night time version of the "Price is Right."

He is survived by his loving and heartbroken parents, Bill and Mary Loughlin, and his dog, Maximus. In addition to his heartbroken parents, he is survived by the love of his life, Rena Rosenblum Loughlin. They shared 15 wonderful years together, of which they were married for 10; and by in-laws Jeffrey and Magnolia Rosenblum and sister-in-law Lisa Rosenblum. Although Mike was an only child, he considered his cousins, Deidre, Sheila, Donna, Alisha, Amanda, Randy, Justin (Mooney), Suzie, Joshua, Jason, Allison, Matt, Sarah, Gwen, David, Austin, and many others siblings. He was an uncle to Lily, Violet, Wes, Ava, Silas, Tyler, and Colson. There are too many family and friends to mention. He will be missed by godmother, Aunt Shirley and Uncle Ron Jescavage, Aunt Marilyn and Uncle Ron Davies, Aunt Theresa and Uncle Joe Pagoda, Uncle Skip Loughlin, and Aunt Marilyn Loughlin.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Bernadine Mooney and Lewis and Margaret Loughlin; and by his uncle and godfather, John Mooney Jr.

The family would like to thank Dr. Jacqueline French, Dr. Michael Sperling and Dr. Aliasgar Chittalia for all their years of caring for Mike. Also, thank you to Dr. Christopher Skidmore, Sarah Tefft, and Bethany Goering for their valiant efforts to save Mike's life. You all hold a special place in our hearts.

Viewing will be held Thursday, Aug. 25 at All Saints Church, 66 Willow St., Plymouth, from 10 a.m. to noon. Mass of burial will take place at noon followed by interment at St. Vincent's cemetery, Washington Avenue, Larksville.

Michael, Rena, his parents and their epilepsy support group members have been trying to open an epilepsy community center for NEPA to help others living with epilepsy. In lieu of flowers, you can honor mike's memory by making donations to the efepa, 919 Walnut St., suite 700, Philadelphia, PA 19107 or at efepa.org/donation. "Heroes get remembered, but legends like, Mike Loughlin, will never die. Follow your heart, kid, and you'll never go wrong."

Rena, Mary, & Bill

I was a teammate/friends with Mike in high school and was very saddened to hear of his passing. I remember him as a kind and caring individual who always had a smile on his face. I shared many great times with him that I remember fondly. Even though we lost touch over the years I would always see his pictures on social media and you could tell he touched many lives along his journey through life. I am sure his loved ones were very proud. Sending my thoughts on prayers to you all during this difficult time.

My heart goes out to every single one of you. The devastation I felt for the family hit hard. He was such an amazing soul that would take the shirt off his back for anyone. He had so much love to give and indeed he did just that. His spirit will live on with all of us that he touched. I love you all. Keep your heads high cause you know mike wouldn´t want it any other way.

I was so saddened to read about Mikes untimely passing. I knew Mike and his mom when I worked as a school nurse at Pittston Area. Both were so giving of their knowledge and experiences with Epilepsy and they shared to help others gain an understanding of caring for those with this disease. I offer my deepest condolences to Mike´s loved ones. He truly made an impact in this world.

I met Mike when he worked as a TSS worker in my classroom. When ever I was having a down day he would say something that would make me laugh and smile. I always looked forward to him being in my room. He was so wonderful with his clients and a joy to be around. I still remember when my pre-school class did Dr. Seuss week he dressed up in his Dr. Seuss p.j.'s, we all laughed so hard that we had tears in our eyes. Mike was an amazing person he will be so missed. I feel it was an honor to have known him. Thoughts and prayers to your family.

I´ve known Mike since we were 5 years old, although we lost touch with after I left for the military in '99. We grew up together; he was my best guy friend all through our youth.

He took me to the Freshman Dance (the theme was Total Eclipse of the Heart) because we both wanted to go and felt most comfortable with each other (no rejection from asking a date). :)

He drove me to school every day for a whole year because he had a truck and I didn´t want to take the bus.

He made me love Metallica by blaring it on the way to school everyday.

We did the Senior Waltz together when we were paired up....all those hours of practicing!

He helped me through my first heart break!

Mike was the funniest, most light-hearted human, always greeting you with a smile; even when life put him through adversity. I'm so sorry for not having shared our adult lives together too. His mom was like a second mom to me in my adolescents and I'm so very sorry to Rena and all of his family for the loss of such a light.

All my love!
Mary

Our hearts are shattered by this news! We only just met Mike and Rena one year ago through our adoption process who we were riding the waves with and navigating this journey with. We are so sad to not to of been able to get to know Mike even more but are so grateful at the same time to have gotten to know him for the short time we did. In that year we saw what an amazing guy he was and so kind to all he met. He accepted us with open arms and so much love as we did him. We love you Mike and our hearts go out to his family and friends.

An old friend...

August 23, 2022

To know Mike was to love him. His personality was only small in comparison to his smile. His infectious laugh and love for his family and friends made everyone around him feel a little more special. Mike was a force of nature that was no match for the obstacles he faced. Our heart is broken for his devoted parents, wife and devasted friends and family. The "Michael P. Loughlin Epilepsy Community Center of NEPA" will be the perfect building to memoralize such a legendary human being- the place to remind people "when life knocks you down, you can choose to get back up!"

I met Mike when he worked as a TSS worker in my classroom. I always looked forward to him being in my room. He was always quick with a laugh and smile. He was so wonderful with his clients and a joy to be around. I enjoyed my conversations with him about God, faith and the beauty of life. His eyes always lit up when he spoke of his wife Rena, and it was obvious that his love for her knew no bounds. He was a beautiful soul who touched the lives of all who knew him.
