Michael James Patrick Rushton, of the Parsons section of Wilkes-Barre, a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on July 8, 2025, at the age of 87. Surrounded by love, he left this world just as he lived in it — with quiet strength, deep faith and an unwavering devotion to family.
Born in Wilkes-Barre, Mike was the cherished son of the late James P. and Amelia (Luongo) Rushton, and the beloved brother of the late Amelia "Polly" Rushton Barrett. He graduated from St. Mary's High School and earned his bachelor's degree in education from King's College — laying the foundation for a life dedicated to service, learning and leadership.
Mike proudly served in the United States Army, a chapter of his life that instilled in him a sense of duty and resilience that carried through everything he did. He went on to enjoy a long and meaningful career as an educator and then a committed employee of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
On June 5, 1965, Mike married the love of his life, Barbara Matiko. Together, they built a beautiful life rooted in unconditional love, enduring partnership and shared adventure. For 60 wonderful years, they were each other's greatest joy and constant companions.
Family was the heart of everything Mike did. He found his greatest happiness in creating memories with those he loved — especially during the family's treasured annual trips to Wildwood, Myrtle Beach and Disney World. These vacations weren't just getaways — they were traditions, full of laughter, stories and love passed down through generations.
Mike also had a deep appreciation for music, particularly country music, which filled his home and his heart with comfort and joy. Whether it was the familiar voice of Merle Haggard or the twang of a classic tune, music was a source of peace and pleasure that accompanied him through every chapter of life.
A lifelong New York Yankees fan, Mike could always be found cheering for his team, often surrounded by grandchildren who adored him. His presence was steady and reassuring — always quick with a warm smile, a wise word, or a heartfelt hug.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Barbara Rushton; his two sons, Michael and Jim; his adored grandchildren, Brittany Hagan (Robert Jr.) and James Rushton; and his great-grandson, Robert "Tripp" T. Hagan III, whose light and laughter brought Mike immeasurable joy; and a new great-grandchild expected later this year, a blessing he looked forward to with quiet excitement and love.
Mike Rushton will be remembered for his quiet strength, unwavering kindness and the deep love he poured into every aspect of his life. His legacy lives on in the stories he told, the music he loved, the lessons he taught and the countless lives he touched. He was deeply loved — and will be deeply missed.
