Michael Savokinas Obituary
Born Oct. 8, 1941, in Pittston, he was a son of the late Joseph and Madeline (Fay) Savokinas. He was a graduate of Pittston Area High School and a member of St. Joseph Marello Parish in Pittston. He was a member of the U.S. Air Force Reserves from 1962 to 1968.
In 1964, along with his brother Raymond, he founded Savo's Pizza and Family Restaurant on Main Street in Pittston. Throughout 49 years, he proudly served as its owner, including at its current location in the Pittston Commons, where he always greeted his customers with a friendly smile and handshake. He was also an avid collector of Greater Pittston historical items and was a founding member of the Greater Pittston Historical Society, where he served as treasurer. He was one of the original owners of The Staircase Lounge in 1975 and was a former president and treasurer of the Pittston Mall Merchants Association. From 1983 to 2003, he was the sponsor of the Savo's Little League Baseball Tournament of Champions.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Lawrence, and a sister, Mary Beth Orlowski.
Surviving are his loving wife of 43 years, the former Georgia Bartolai; sons, Arthur and his wife, Kimberly, Hughestown, and Michael Jr. and his wife, Alice, Pittston Township; grandsons, Austyn Pivarnik, Austin Killino, and Brandon Savokinas; brothers, Raymond and his wife, Marie, West Pittston, Jimmy and his wife, Diane, Hughestown, and Joseph, Pittston; sisters, Cynthia Hrobuchak and her husband, William, Old Forge, Dorothy Kroll and her husband, Robert, Plains, and Rose Butera, Jenkins Township; and sister-in-law, Deanna Savokinas, California. Also surviving are numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and countless numbers of employees who worked for him over the last 49 years.
Funeral services have been entrusted to Graziano Funeral Home Inc., Pittston Township. Viewing hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the funeral home. Funeral services will begin at the funeral home at 9 a.m. Wednesday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Marello Parish, William Street, Pittston, with the Rev. Joseph Sibilano officiating. Interment services will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carverton. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that all donations be made to the Greater Pittston Historical Society at GPHS, 131 Bear Creek Road, Pittston Township, PA 18640. Mike was a great role model. I'm in late 60's and remember his kindness when I was 15. Giving me my first job! Mike taught to always say THANK YOU to a customer and add HAVE A NICE DAY! To this day I still say that. And when ever I meet anyone I always add Have a Nice Day. Great employer. Loved his wife, Georgia and his Sons.

I will never forget Mike. To this day 47 yrs ago, he hired me as a young teen for my first job. What a great role model. I learned so many people skills because of him. I learned kindness not only to customers but thru him to be kind to co workers and any one that I passed. Always to say, "Thank you and have a nice day". No other employer has ever treated me so kind. He was first a family man. His wife was his number one love, then his two boys came along and I was trusted to occasionally babysit them. He was such a hard worker and it encouraged me to do the same. I still tell people about him in my life . He gave so many young teenagers an opportunity to work their first jobs. God bless his family.

I was so sorry to hear about Mike's passing. I was picking up pizza about a month ago and saw Mike and shared a short story. I told him , as I was looking at his collection, that my very first cut of Savo's pizza was at the Pittston Pool. Way back in the 60's .. And its still the best Pizza in our area. Mike was an amazing person and a great boss. My first job was at Savo's when they moved to the Pittston Plaza back in the early seventies. Uncle Mike was the best Godfather ever! If one were to take all the special comments, remarks, and compliments used to describe Mike, they wouldn't even come close to how I've felt about him my entire life, and of course, still do.
